Health Tech Boom and Social Bonds Strain Revealed in Latest Wellness Index
ICICI Lombard General Insurance showcased the 2023 edition of the India Wellness Index, shedding light on the nation’s health and well-being. The sixth-year study delves into the impact of health tech and social media on India’s wellness landscape, revealing both positive and concerning trends.
The Rise of Digital Well-being
The Wellness Index, standing at 72 out of 100, reflects an increase in digital well-being and health tech usage. With a comprehensive framework covering Physical, Mental, Family, Financial, Workplace, and Social pillars, the study surveyed 2,052 respondents across 19 cities. It highlights a growing reliance on digital platforms for wellness, catalyzed by the virtual push during lockdowns.
Social Media’s Role in Wellness
Social media emerges as a key player, with 70% of Indians using it to express or discuss physical and mental wellness. Respondents consider platforms like Facebook and YouTube crucial for accessing motivational content. However, the report notes a decline in social wellness, especially among working women, emphasizing the need for community-centric initiatives.
Youth Struggles and Workplace Stress
Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, report higher levels of stress, lack of stamina, and obesity. Workplace wellness declines, impacting the mental well-being of the workforce. The study reveals that 77% of Indians experience at least one stress symptom regularly.
Focus on Heart Health
Chronic ailments, including diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and hypertension, affect approximately 35% of respondents. Gen X bears the brunt, and the report underscores the need for heightened awareness, with only 35% correctly identifying all risk factors for cardiovascular health.
Mental Health Challenges
Every third person in India is grappling with stress, and the incidence of stress and depression symptoms is rising. Mental wellness, the second most important attribute in well-being, sees a 2% fall compared to 2022. The study highlights a shift in perspective towards mental health, with awareness of coping strategies experiencing a decline.
