MiG-29UPG Operational Sortie Shows IAF Power and Pride

MiG-29UPG Operational Sortie Shows a Powerful Connection With the Frontline Squadron

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) flew an operational formation sortie on the Mikoyan MiG-29UPG from a forward airbase today, reaffirming the leadership’s continued engagement with frontline operational units of the Indian Air Force.

The Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force is the highest-ranking officer in the service. This position is held by a four-star air chief marshal. The CAS is responsible for the operational readiness, training, and strategic direction of the entire Indian Air Force. When the CAS personally flies a fighter aircraft during an operational visit, it sends a strong message to the force. It shows that senior leadership remains closely connected to the pilots and personnel who work every day to protect India’s skies. In military culture, such actions help boost morale and show confidence in the aircraft, the pilots, and the systems used in combat operations.

The formation was led by Flight Lieutenant Parvinder Singh. Before recovery, the formation executed a smart peel-off manoeuvre over the runway, showcasing precision flying and the high standards of operational training maintained by the squadron.

In fighter aviation, formation flying is a key skill. It requires pilots to fly very close to each other while maintaining perfect coordination and timing. A peel-off manoeuvre is often performed when a group of aircraft returns to base. In this manoeuvre, the jets separate one by one from the formation and land in sequence. The move looks simple from the ground, but it requires careful control and excellent communication between the pilots. Fighter squadrons practise such manoeuvres regularly because they build discipline, teamwork, and sharp flying skills. The Indian Air Force places a strong focus on training so that its pilots are ready for both peacetime missions and combat situations.

Air Warriors of the base maintained a high state of operational readiness and actively participated in activities related to flying during the visit.

The Indian Air Force often uses the term “Air Warriors” to describe all its personnel. This includes pilots, engineers, technicians, and ground staff who work together to keep aircraft flying safely. Operational readiness means that aircraft, crews, and support systems are always prepared for immediate action if needed. Fighter bases maintain strict routines to ensure this readiness. Aircraft must be checked, fuelled, and armed quickly. Pilots must stay trained and medically fit. Ground crews must inspect engines, weapons, radar, and navigation systems. This teamwork allows fighter squadrons to respond quickly during emergencies, border tensions, or national security operations.

During the visit, the CAS was briefed by the Commanding Officer on the squadron’s operational role, the enhanced capabilities of the MiG-29 UPG platform, and the unit’s rich legacy. The squadron is set to complete 63 years since its induction in 1963, reflecting a long and distinguished history of service in safeguarding the nation’s skies.

The MiG-29UPG is an upgraded version of the MiG-29 fighter aircraft. India first inducted the MiG-29 into the Air Force in the 1980s. Over the years, the aircraft has been modernised to keep it effective in modern air combat. The upgraded version includes advanced radar systems, improved engines, modern cockpit displays, and the ability to carry more powerful weapons. These upgrades allow the aircraft to track multiple targets, conduct long-range missions, and operate in complex battle environments. Fighter squadrons with such aircraft play a key role in protecting Indian airspace and responding quickly to threats. The squadron mentioned in the report has served the country for more than six decades. Many Indian Air Force squadrons carry proud histories, often taking part in major military operations and national defence missions over the years.

The CAS also interacted with aircrew, technicians and ground personnel, acknowledging the critical role played by technical and support staff in ensuring sustained operational readiness of combat platforms.

Behind every fighter aircraft in the sky, there is a large team on the ground. Technicians and engineers inspect aircraft before and after every flight. They check engines, electronics, weapons systems, fuel lines, and safety equipment. Even a small technical problem can affect a mission, so careful maintenance is vital. Ground staff also manage logistics, communications, and air traffic support at the base. The Indian Air Force often highlights that modern air operations are not possible without the dedication of these skilled professionals. Their work ensures that aircraft remain safe, reliable, and ready for combat missions at any time.

He further met veterans from nearby areas and expressed appreciation for their continued connection with the Air Force community and their enduring contribution to its traditions.

Veterans hold an important place in the culture of the armed forces. Many retired officers and airmen continue to stay connected with the Air Force community long after their service ends. They share their experience with younger personnel and take part in events organised by local air bases. Such interactions help preserve the traditions and values of the service. Veterans also play an important role in telling the stories of past operations, training younger generations, and keeping alive the spirit of service and sacrifice that defines the armed forces.

Such visits by senior leadership reinforce the Indian Air Force’s operational ethos, provide valuable engagement with frontline personnel, and help maintain a close connection with the evolving operational environment.

Regular visits by senior commanders are an important part of military leadership. They allow top officials to see the real conditions at operational bases and understand the challenges faced by frontline personnel. These visits also help leaders review training standards, aircraft performance, and mission readiness. At the same time, they strengthen the bond between leadership and service members. In a fast-changing security environment, such direct engagement ensures that the Indian Air Force remains alert, prepared, and capable of defending the country’s airspace whenever required.
