Over the next five years, the company aims to produce 3,000 turning machines and 1,000 machining centres every year from this site alone. To put that in perspective, these machines are the “mother machines” of industry—they are used to create everything from engine parts for cars to tiny components for medical devices.
The expansion is also a fantastic story for the local economy. The plant will start with about 100 staff members, but that number is expected to jump to 350 as production ramps up. More importantly, Ace Designers is focusing on “localisation.” This means they aren’t just bringing in parts from elsewhere; they are working with local businesses and workshops in Gujarat to build a supply chain. This creates a “multiplier effect” where one big factory helps dozens of smaller family-owned businesses grow as well. Looking back at where Ace Designers started makes this milestone even more impressive. The company was founded in 1979 by three visionary engineers from the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute. They didn’t start with a giant factory; they started as a small design consultancy. Over the decades, they grew into the Ace Micromatic Group. Today, after merging different branches of the business, Ace Designers Limited stands as India’s largest manufacturer of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) turning centres. Their journey is a classic example of Indian engineering excellence, going from a small office to a global leader.
Financially, the company is on a very strong footing. With a turnover expected to cross £280 million (approximately INR 2,800 crore) in the current financial year, they are a dominant force. Before this new plant even opened, they already had the muscle to build 8,000 turning centres and 3,400 machining centres annually. Their machines are exported to almost every corner of the globe, including Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. For over 25 years, they have held the top spot in the Indian market, which is no small feat given the stiff competition from German and Japanese manufacturers.
TK Ramesh, the Managing Director of ADL, explained that being close to customers is the main goal. By being in Ahmedabad, they can provide much faster service and support. In the world of high-speed manufacturing, if a machine stops, a whole factory can lose money. Having technicians and spare parts nearby is a game-changer for local clients. This “customer-first” approach has been a hallmark of the company since its early days in Bengaluru.
Adding to this, Bill Shukla, the Joint Managing Director, highlighted that this isn’t just a traditional factory. It is a “next-generation” unit. This means it uses digital technology and smart sensors to ensure every machine produced is perfect. These high-precision tools are essential for modern industries like aerospace and renewable energy, where even a tiny mistake in a metal part can cause big problems.
