Nissan TEKTON Himalayan Drive Earns India Book of Records Recognition

Nissan Motor India has entered the India Book of Records after a convoy of 60 all-new Nissan TEKTON premium SUVs completed a Himalayan drive to Leh, marking what organisers said was the largest convoy of a single-model four-wheeler to reach the city. The five-day expedition covered more than 700 kilometres, travelling from Chandigarh through Manali and Zangla via Shinku La before reaching Leh.

The drive formed part of Nissan’s celebrations marking 75 years of its SUV heritage. According to the company, the convoy began in Chandigarh, which sits at an elevation of 1,053 feet, climbed to Shinku La Pass at 16,703 feet, and finished in Leh at 11,480 feet. The route included highways, steep mountain roads and high altitude terrain, providing an opportunity to test the vehicles in changing weather and challenging road conditions.

The convoy was driven by members of the media and automotive industry experts rather than professional rally drivers. Nissan said the journey was designed to demonstrate the TEKTON’s capability, durability and engineering under real-world driving conditions instead of controlled test environments.

This milestone reflects Nissan’s commitment to delivering premium SUVs that give customers confidence wherever their journeys take them. It also reinforces our belief in the all-new TEKTON as a vehicle engineered to perform across India’s diverse driving environments.”

The record adds another milestone to Nissan’s long history in the sport utility vehicle segment. The Japanese manufacturer introduced the Patrol in 1951, a model that gained a reputation in many parts of the world for its ability to handle deserts, mountains and other demanding terrain. Over the decades, Nissan has expanded its SUV portfolio with vehicles including the Pathfinder, X Trail, Qashqai, Juke and Magnite, serving different markets and customer needs.

The Nissan TEKTON draws inspiration from the Patrol, according to Nissan. The company says the model combines Japanese design, advanced safety features, Google built-in services with access to more than 200 applications through Google Play, and a fully turbocharged engine range. While such features are becoming more common across the automotive industry, connected vehicle technology is now an important factor for buyers looking for navigation, entertainment and voice-based digital services.

India has become one of the world’s fastest-growing SUV markets. Industry data from recent years shows that SUVs now account for more than half of all passenger vehicle sales in the country. Buyers are increasingly choosing higher ground clearance, larger cabins and vehicles that can handle a wider variety of road conditions. This shift has encouraged manufacturers to introduce more compact, mid-size and premium SUVs across different price ranges.

High altitude endurance drives have become a popular way for vehicle makers to demonstrate engineering performance. Roads leading to Leh, including routes through Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, expose vehicles to steep climbs, thin air, rough surfaces and rapidly changing temperatures. These conditions place additional demands on engines, cooling systems, braking performance and suspension. Successful completion of such drives can provide practical evidence of how vehicles perform outside laboratory testing.

The inclusion of Shinku La Pass also adds significance to the expedition. The pass, located on the Nimu Padum Darcha road, has become increasingly important as new infrastructure projects improve road connectivity between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Better transport links are expected to support tourism, trade and strategic movement in the region over the coming years.

The Nissan TEKTON is manufactured at Nissan’s Chennai plant under the company’s “One Car, One World” strategy. This manufacturing approach allows vehicles built in India to serve both domestic customers and export markets using common engineering standards. Nissan confirmed that the TEKTON will also be exported to countries in the Middle East and Africa, reflecting India’s growing role as a manufacturing hub for global automobile companies.

India has steadily strengthened its position in automotive production during the past decade. Several international manufacturers now use Indian factories to supply overseas markets because of competitive manufacturing costs, an established supplier network and improving production quality. Vehicle exports from India have continued to rise, particularly in passenger cars and compact SUVs

Nissan has announced special introductory ex-showroom prices starting at ₹10.49 lakh for the Turbo T160 range and ₹14.99 lakh for the Turbo T280 range. Bookings are open through Nissan dealerships and the company’s digital platforms across India. Customer deliveries began on 20 July 2026.

For Nissan, the India Book of Records recognition is more than a promotional achievement. It comes at a time when competition in India’s SUV market continues to grow, with global and domestic manufacturers introducing new models across multiple price segments. Independent testing by customers and automotive experts over the coming months will ultimately determine how the TEKTON performs in everyday use, but the successful completion of the Himalayan expedition provides an early demonstration of the vehicle’s ability to operate across some of India’s most demanding roads.
