Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has added another major achievement to his growing career by becoming the first Indian player to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, one of the strongest events in international chess.

The 20-year-old chess star secured the title after a remarkable campaign in Oslo, finishing ahead of a field that included World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, reigning World Champion Gukesh D, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer and fellow Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi. His victory is being seen as one of the most significant achievements by an Indian chess player in recent years and another sign of India’s growing strength in the sport.

Praggnanandhaa entered the final round with a realistic chance of winning the tournament. He drew his classical game against Arjun Erigaisi before winning the Armageddon tiebreak. Results from other matches then worked in his favour, allowing him to finish at the top of the standings and claim a title that had previously eluded several leading Indian players.

The Chief Minister also played a friendly game of chess with the champion during the meeting.

For Indian chess, the Norway Chess title represents more than a single tournament victory. It demonstrates that Indian players are no longer simply competing with the world’s best but are increasingly defeating them in the biggest events.
