World Cycling Day Celebration at the Statue of Unity
World Cycling Day Celebration at the Statue of Unity Inspires Fitness and Environmental Awareness
On the occasion of World Cycling Day, approximately 100 cadets of the 5 Gujarat Battalion NCC, Surat participated in a Cycling Awareness Rally at the iconic Statue of Unity on 07 June 2026. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Gujarat Police personnel and local civilians, promoting the spirit of fitness, environmental consciousness, and healthy living.
The rally was followed by interactions with members of the local community, where cadets highlighted the numerous health benefits of cycling, including improved physical fitness, reduced pollution, and a sustainable lifestyle. Through awareness activities, participants emphasised the importance of regular exercise, love for nature, and adopting eco-friendly modes of transport. The event successfully conveyed the message of “Fit Citizens, Healthy Nation” while fostering community engagement and environmental responsibility.
The participation of nearly 100 NCC cadets gave the event a strong sense of purpose and discipline. NCC activities have long encouraged young people to take part in nation-building efforts, and events such as this help cadets connect directly with society. Their presence at the Statue of Unity, one of India’s most recognised landmarks, added further significance to the awareness campaign.
The involvement of Gujarat Police personnel and local residents reflected a growing public interest in fitness and environmental protection. Similar cycling events organised across India during World Bicycle Day celebrations have seen participation from people of all age groups, including students, senior citizens, sports enthusiasts and government officials. Such events help spread awareness that cycling is not only a recreational activity but also a practical way to improve health and reduce dependence on fuel-based transport. Recent cycling awareness programmes in several Indian cities have promoted fuel conservation, greener transport and healthier lifestyles through community participation.
During their interaction with residents, NCC cadets explained how regular cycling can improve overall fitness. Health experts around the world continue to recommend cycling as one of the most effective low-impact exercises. It helps strengthen muscles, improves heart health, supports weight management and enhances mental well-being. Doctors have also pointed out that even 30 minutes of moderate cycling each day can help reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure and several lifestyle-related illnesses. Cycling is considered suitable for people of different age groups because it places less stress on joints compared to many other forms of exercise.
The environmental message shared during the rally was equally important. According to international organisations, bicycles remain one of the simplest and most sustainable forms of transport. Replacing short vehicle journeys with cycling can help lower air pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ease traffic congestion. As cities continue to face challenges related to pollution and rising fuel consumption, cycling offers an affordable and practical solution that benefits both individuals and communities.
Cadets also encouraged people to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives. Environmental experts often describe cycling as a small action that can create a meaningful impact when practised regularly. Every bicycle ride reduces the use of fossil fuels and supports cleaner air. Many international campaigns linked to World Bicycle Day promote cycling as a way to create healthier and more sustainable cities for future generations.
Another important aspect discussed during the awareness activities was the connection between cycling and community well-being. Cycling events bring together people from different backgrounds and age groups. They encourage social interaction, teamwork and a shared commitment to healthier living. Across India, cycling clubs and community groups have seen increasing participation as more people recognise the benefits of active lifestyles. Inclusive cycling initiatives have also helped make cycling accessible to a wider section of society.
The choice of the Statue of Unity as the venue strengthened the message of unity, public service and national development. The monument attracts visitors from across the country and serves as an ideal location for awareness programmes that combine patriotism, health and environmental responsibility.
The World Cycling Day celebration organised by 5 Gujarat Battalion NCC, Surat, successfully combined fitness awareness, environmental education and community engagement. Through their active participation and interaction with the public, the cadets demonstrated how simple actions can contribute to a healthier society and a cleaner environment. The rally not only promoted cycling as a healthy habit but also encouraged citizens to take responsibility for the well-being of their communities and the planet. The event stood as a meaningful reminder that building a strong nation begins with healthy citizens, responsible choices and collective action towards a sustainable future.
