Mauricio Pochettino will be under even greater pressure after Paris St Germain fell 3-0 to Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday (March 20), a result that comes less than two weeks after the club’s Champions League exit. After OM beat Nice 2-1 thanks to an Arkadiusz Milik penalty on the stroke of halftime and a late goal by Cedric Bakambu, PSG still leads Olympique de Marseille by 12 points after 65 points from 29 games.

Nice dropped to fourth place with 50 points, two behind Stade Rennais, who thrashed Metz 6-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Serhou Guirassy. PSG displayed next to nothing at the Louis II stadium 11 days after Lionel Messi was ruled out due to sickness. Real Madrid knocked them out of the Champions League last 16 after scoring three goals in 17 minutes.

Monaco moved up to a seventh-place with 44 points. “Congratulations on a job well done.” PSG forward Kylian Mbappe stated, “They’re a good team, a great club.” “The objective is to win the tenth French crown.” People will talk about the Champions League if we win 8-0 or 9-0. Whatever occurs, if we have any self-esteem, we must respect ourselves. We must also show respect for the fans.”

Pochettino, who is known for his soft-spoken demeanor, had some tough words to say. “At this level of competition, the way we lost is unacceptable.” “We can’t start a game like this,” remarked the Argentine, who took over in the middle.

“We need to move on from our Champions League exit; hopefully, the international break will help us do so.”

PSG was completely outplayed in midfield, and it was only a matter of time before they were punished. Wissam Ben Yedder gave the hosts the lead on 25 minutes, deflecting Youssouf Fofana’s cross into the top corner beyond Presnel Kimpembe at the near post.

PSG’s first attempt of the game, a curled shot from Neymar that went just wide, set up the opener. Before the break, the capital squad improved marginally, with Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi creating chances, but they were still far from their best.

After the half, PSG was not much better, as Mbappe squandered a couple of wonderful chances before Monaco doubled their lead in the 68th minute. Fofana found Ben Yedder on the right flank uncontested, and the France striker’s pass was intercepted by Ruben Aguilar, who deflected the ball for Kevin Volland to score from six meters.

Pochettino substituted Mauro Icardi for Leandro Paredes and Julian Draxler for Neymar, but the substitutions had no effect as PSG conceded another goal six minutes from time. PSG’s fourth consecutive away defeat in all competitions was confirmed when Volland was fouled in the area by Kimpembe, and Ben Yedder converted the resultant penalty.
