A Fresh Surprise from Familiar Faces
Vatsal Sheth, known for over 20 years of experience in films and TV, surprises everyone by making his debut in a Gujarati film — yes, “Surprise” is his very first Gujarati movie! That itself is the film’s first twist.
Adding to the excitement, popular actress Helly Shah, who has worked in many hit Hindi TV shows and has won several awards, also makes her Gujarati film debut with this movie. Being a Gujarati from Ahmedabad, her appearance in a Gujarati film was long-awaited, and that’s the second surprise.
The movie clearly targets today’s youth, though the makers might not agree openly. With scenes, dialogues, and chemistry not often seen in Gujarati cinema, “Surprise” boldly steps away from traditional storytelling. It has fresh content, trendy vibes, and a plot that feels more like a Bollywood road thriller with Gujarati flavours.
Story in Short: Road, Romance, Robbery
The movie revolves around a daring robbery of ₹32 crores of diamonds, cash, and an imported car. Two smart and stylish young women pull off this heist and plan to sell the diamonds to an agent in Goa before flying off to Poland.
Their journey from Mumbai to Goa brings them face-to-face with a charming young man. What follows is a thrilling ride filled with love, fun, and a lot of unexpected twists.
There are many surprises on their way — but no spoilers here! You’ll need to watch the movie to find out what happens next.
There are two melodious songs and one catchy rap towards the end. Romantic scenes and sweet dialogues are well-placed and are sure to appeal to Gen Z and millennial audiences. The film feels modern and relatable, especially to young viewers.
The Performance
Vatsal Sheth
He looks stylish and delivers a fantastic performance. His expressive grey eyes, natural acting, and strong dialogue delivery make his role feel drafted for him. Even though this is his first Gujarati film, he looks very comfortable and confident, especially in romantic and intense scenes. His character has many layers, and he nails them all.
Helly Shah
She may look sweet and innocent, but don’t be fooled — her character is sharp and bold. Even though this is her first Gujarati film, her strong acting skills shine. With her past acting experience, she plays her role with ease and grace.
Jahnvi Chauhan
Jahnvi Chauhan steals the show! Her expressions — whether scared, angry, or romantic — are on point. She plays a tough and stubborn robber and delivers a powerful performance. She deserves special mention for her depth and natural screen presence.
What Could Have Been Better
- The storyline had space for more light comedy, which is missing. Some funny moments could’ve balanced the tension.
- While twists are good, here they feel a bit too much and can confuse the audience.
- The movie feels slightly long; a tighter edit would have helped.
- One scene where Vatsal’s character is tied up raises doubts — was he really tied or just pretending? It should have been realistic.
- The film starts directly with the plot. A little backstory or buildup for the characters would have made it better.
- The climax doesn’t shock me, I was able to easily predict it, may not be for everyone.
What Works Well
- All three lead actors delivered strong, engaging performances.
- Romantic scenes in the film feel fresh and are nicely done — a new trend rising for Gujarati cinema.
- Director Sachin Brahmbhatt uses his experience well, keeping the film stylish and youth-friendly.
- The songs, especially the title track and the background score, are catchy and memorable.
- The film feels like a fusion of Bollywood thrillers and Gujarati charm.
- The film looks polished — from visuals to sound, everything feels professional.
- Technically, the movie looks sound.
Newz Daddy’s Final Thoughts
“Surprise” is a youthful romantic thriller that dares to do something different in Gujarati cinema. It brings together fresh storytelling, stylish visuals, and great acting. It’s made for today’s young audience, especially those who enjoy road trips, love stories, and unexpected twists.
This film is a bold step in a new direction for Gujarati films, and it’s now up to the Gujarati audience to welcome it with open arms.
