RRU Pushes Sustainable Innovation For National Security

Prof. (Dr.) Kalpesh H. Wandra, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University, participated as the Guest of Honour during the valedictory session of the International Conference on Sustainability, Innovation, and Technology (ICSIT 2025), held at Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), Nagpur. In his address, Prof. Wandra highlighted the critical and “inextricably linked” relationship between national security and technological advancement, underscoring RRU’s unique mandate to secure the nation through innovative and sustainable practices. Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) is India’s only national security university under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It focuses on producing skilled professionals in police, military sciences, cybersecurity, and allied areas. Its leadership role in linking technology with national security is widely acknowledged. Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), part of Symbiosis International (Deemed University), is known for hosting global-level conferences in engineering and sustainability, making it a fitting venue for ICSIT 2025.
The conference, which was technically sponsored by IEEE Bombay, received an impressive 2,056 paper submissions from across the globe, with 299 papers selected for presentation. The event drew a distinguished gathering of experts, including Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, Dr. Nitin Rakesh, Director, SIT Nagpur; Dr. Raghab Prasad Dash, Adviser – AICTE; Dr. Ravinder Singhal (I.P.S.), Commissioner of Police, Nagpur; Dr. Lohit Matani (I.P.S.), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Nagpur; Dr. Ameya Yeravdekar, Head – All Campuses, Symbiosis International (Deemed University); Dr. Shashikant Patil, Advisor IEEE, Bombay Section; and Dr. Sudhanshu Maurya, Conference Chair, ICSIT 2025. IEEE Bombay Section is one of the most active in India, promoting innovation, standards, and technology development. Its technical sponsorship gives credibility to ICSIT 2025.
The huge number of submissions (2,056) shows growing global interest in sustainability and technology. Acceptance of only 299 papers means the selection was competitive, reflecting high academic quality.
Nitin Gadkari’s presence highlights the importance of green infrastructure and clean technologies in India’s road and transport policies, which connect directly with sustainable innovation. AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) plays a national role in regulating and improving technical education, aligning conferences like ICSIT with national academic goals. Senior IPS officers attending show that sustainable innovation is not just about technology but also about public safety and urban management.
In his address at the International Conference on Sustainability, Innovation, and Technology, Prof. Wandra emphasised the critical and “inextricably linked” relationship between national security and technological advancement. He asserted that a nation’s security in the 21st century is increasingly defined by its technological resilience and its commitment to sustainable development. He highlighted RRU’s unique mandate to leverage innovations like green IT infrastructure, computational intelligence, and self-reliance in technology to bolster India’s defence and public safety.
Globally, many nations now consider cyber resilience, AI-driven defence, and sustainable energy as crucial pillars of national security. India is following the same path through initiatives like “Digital India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” Green IT infrastructure refers to energy-efficient data centres and eco-friendly computing, reducing environmental impact while keeping systems secure. Computational intelligence is widely used in defence simulations, predictive policing, and border security systems, showing direct links between technology and security. In his concluding remarks, Dr. Wandra urged India’s innovators and youth to align their work with the national vision of a ‘Naya Bharat’ by translating academic research into tangible solutions. Echoing the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for self-reliance, he stressed that these presentations are just a starting point; now, participants should focus on pursuing patent protection and developing inventions that deliver clear societal and national benefits.
India has been pushing for more patent filings from universities and research institutions. In recent years, student and faculty-driven patents have increased, but Prof. Wandra’s call shows that more is still needed.
The government offers schemes like Atal Innovation Mission and Startup India to support young researchers in moving from idea to market, which aligns with RRU’s message at the conference. The conference, a prominent gathering of experts and scholars, concluded with a powerful consensus among attendees to dedicate their efforts toward fulfilling the requirements of ‘Naya Bharat’ (New India) to ensure a secure and safe nation. This commitment aligns seamlessly with the core mission of Rashtriya Raksha University.“Naya Bharat” represents India’s vision of becoming self-reliant, technologically advanced, and sustainable. Linking this to national security makes RRU’s mission even more relevant. Conferences like ICSIT bridge the gap between academia, industry, and government, making sure innovations don’t remain in papers but move toward real-world applications.
