Swarrnim University Promotes Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Among Young Girls

In a bid to spread awareness about an often-overlooked aspect of women’s health, the Prasuti Tantra Evum Stree Roga (PTSR) Department of Aarihant Ayurvedic Medical College & Research Institute, under the banner of Swarrnim Startup & Innovation University, recently organized a meaningful event dedicated to educating young girls about menstrual hygiene. The program was held at the Girls School in Moti Adraj village, situated in the Kalol taluka of Gandhinagar district.

Why Menstrual Hygiene Matters

Menstrual hygiene is a critical aspect of women’s health, particularly for adolescent girls who are just beginning to navigate the complexities of menstruation. Unfortunately, in many parts of India, menstruation is still shrouded in taboos and misinformation. This lack of knowledge can lead to poor menstrual hygiene practices, which in turn can cause various health issues, including infections and reproductive health problems. The PTSR Department’s initiative was aimed at addressing these issues head-on by providing young girls with the information they need to manage their menstrual health safely and effectively.

A Step Towards Change

The awareness program was led by Dr. Naveen Banarse, Principal of Aarihant Ayurvedic Medical College, with coordination by Dr. Priyanka Chaudhary, a Consultant and Assistant Professor in the PTSR Department. The event gathered 50 eager students from classes 6 to 8, all ready to learn about this important aspect of their health.

The session began with a traditional Dhantwantari Vandana, setting a serene and respectful tone for the event. This was followed by an engaging lecture by Dr. Chaudhary, who was joined by Dr. Vaishali Lalwani and several students from the institute. Together, they covered a range of topics, including the basics of menstruation, the importance of maintaining hygiene during periods, and the health risks associated with poor menstrual practices.

Breaking Taboos and Educating the Youth

One of the primary goals of the program was to break the societal taboos surrounding menstruation. In many communities, menstruation is considered a topic not to be discussed openly, leading to a lack of proper education and awareness. This program sought to change that by encouraging open dialogue and providing young girls with accurate information. The session emphasized that menstruation is a natural and healthy part of life and that maintaining proper hygiene during this time is essential for their overall well-being.

Promoting Eco-Friendly Choices

In addition to discussing hygiene practices, the program also introduced the students to eco-friendly menstrual products. Traditional menstrual products, such as disposable pads, contribute to environmental pollution due to their non-biodegradable nature. The PTSR Department encouraged the use of sustainable alternatives like cloth pads and menstrual cups, which are not only better for the environment but also safer and more economical in the long run.

The students were shown how to use these products correctly and were educated on their benefits. This part of the session was particularly important, as it aligned with broader environmental goals and provided the students with practical knowledge they could apply in their daily lives.

A Community Effort

The success of this awareness program was not just due to the efforts of the organizers but also to the enthusiastic participation of the students. The young girls were keen to learn and asked insightful questions, reflecting their eagerness to understand their bodies better. This interaction was a positive step towards empowering these girls to take control of their menstrual health and break free from the cycle of misinformation and stigma.

Continuing the Mission

Swarrnim Startup & Innovation University, through initiatives like this, continues to demonstrate its commitment to social responsibility and the well-being of the community. By focusing on menstrual hygiene education, the university is helping to shape a healthier and more informed generation of young women.

Dr. Naveen Banarse and Dr. Priyanka Chaudhary, along with their team, plan to expand these efforts to more schools in the region, aiming to reach as many young girls as possible. They believe that by spreading awareness and providing the right tools, they can help reduce the health risks associated with poor menstrual hygiene and break down the societal barriers that keep these topics in the shadows.

Empowering Young Girls for a Better Future

This awareness program was a significant step towards empowering young girls in rural areas with the knowledge they need to manage their menstrual health safely and confidently. By addressing both the practical aspects of menstrual hygiene and the societal issues surrounding it, the PTSR Department of Aarihant Ayurvedic Medical College & Research Institute has made a lasting impact on the lives of these students.

As Swarrnim Startup & Innovation University continues its mission to promote health and education, it is clear that such initiatives are essential for the betterment of society as a whole. The hope is that with continued efforts, the stigma around menstruation will diminish, and young girls everywhere will have the knowledge and resources they need to lead healthy, empowered lives.
