Shri Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Ahmedabad – A Divine Event

A Grand Celebration of Faith and Poetry: Ahmedabad Prepares for Shri Mahavir Janma Kalyanak

The vibrant city of Ahmedabad is currently buzzing with spiritual energy as it prepares for one of the most significant events on the Jain calendar. On 30 March 2026, the Bharatvarshiya Teerthakshetra Committee, Gujarat, will host a truly magnificent and divine celebration of ‘Shri Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Mahotsav’. This event, which marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara, promises to be a spectacular blend of ancient tradition, soul-stirring music, and high-calibre literature.

The festivities were officially announced during a detailed introductory session led by the Committee’s leadership. Chairman Shri Paras Jain Baj, alongside Vice President Shri Rajeshbhai Shah and General Secretary Shri Rishabhkumar Jain, shared the vision for this year’s mahotsav. They were joined by coordinators Shri Nareshbhai Shah and Shri Ratanbhai Patni, while the venerable Shiromani Patron Shobhag Mal Ji Kataria provided essential guidance on the religious protocols. The sheer scale of the planning suggests that this will be one of the largest gatherings of the Jain community in recent years.

Set to begin at 7:00 PM, the event has found a fitting home at the Kundalpur Nagari Auditorium Hall, situated within the GMDC Ground in Navrangpura. Historically, the GMDC Ground has been the heart of Ahmedabad’s most prestigious cultural and religious festivals. By naming the venue “Kundalpur Nagari,” the organisers are paying a direct and beautiful tribute to the birthplace of Lord Mahavir. Kundalpur, located in modern-day Bihar, remains a primary site of pilgrimage, and the committee aims to recreate that sacred atmosphere right in the heart of Gujarat.

A major highlight of the evening is the Kavi Sammelan, featuring the illustrious poet Shri Shailesh Lodha. Known globally for his wit and profound observations on human nature, Lodha is expected to perform in his signature style. Beyond his fame as a television personality, Lodha is a respected figure in the world of Hindi literature, often using his platform to promote ethical living and family values—themes that resonate deeply with the teachings of Jainism.

He will be joined by the humorous poet Shri Govind Rathi and the internationally acclaimed satirist Shri Chetan Charchit. In the tradition of Indian literary gatherings, a Kavi Sammelan is not merely entertainment; it is a way to reflect on society through a lens of humour and wisdom. Adding to the artistic depth of the night, famous musician Shri Vaibhav Bagmar will lead a ‘Jain Concert’. This devotional performance is designed as a fusion of contemporary musical arrangements and traditional Jain bhajans, aiming to connect the younger generation with their spiritual roots through the power of melody.

The religious significance of the night will be brought to life through a dramatic and “spectacular glimpse” into history. Attendees will witness a reenactment of the royal court of Maharaja Siddharth and Mata Trishala, the parents of Lord Mahavir. According to Jain scriptures, the birth of a Tirthankara is a cosmic event celebrated by the heavens. To mirror this, the organisers have planned a grand arrival of the kings and queens of 24 empires, symbolising the universal reverence for the Tirthankara’s birth.

Devotees are particularly looking forward to the arrival of the Lord, accompanied by celestial sounds, a ritual meant to evoke the joy felt by the gods during the original Janma Kalyanak. The evening will also offer the sacred opportunity for devotees to swing the cradle (Palna) of the infant Lord, a deeply emotional ritual that represents the nurturing of divinity within one’s own heart. The festivities will culminate in a grand Maha Aarti, where hundreds of lamps will be lit, symbolising the light of knowledge that Lord Mahavir brought to the world to dispel the darkness of ignorance.

The event will also see the participation of several high-profile guests, including IAS Principal Secretary Smt. Monaben Khandhar, who will serve as the Chief Guest. Her presence underscores the cultural importance of the festival to the state of Gujarat. The Bharatvarshiya Teerthakshetra Committee has extended a warm and open invitation to the entire Jain community of Ahmedabad and devotees from all walks of life. This mahotsav is not just a celebration of a historical birth, but a vibrant reminder of the timeless values of non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya), and compassion that Lord Mahavir championed over 2,500 years ago.
