Sustainable Rural Entrepreneurship Grows Fast with a Strong Skill Training Push

The Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) inaugurated the Eco Action Learning Centre (ELC) in Bangalore on 28 April 2026, a dedicated experiential training facility aimed at promoting sustainable rural entrepreneurship through practical, skill-based learning.

The Centre was inaugurated by Ms Manisha Bhattacharya, Managing Director – Corporate Citizenship, Accenture; Dr Sunil Shukla, Director General, EDII and Dr Raman Gujral, Director – CSR Partnerships, EDII.

The Eco Action Learning Centre in Bangalore serves as a hands-on training platform under the Micro Skill Development programme (MSDP), enabling rural entrepreneurs to gain real-time exposure to eco-friendly production systems and small-scale enterprise operations.

Across India, skill-based training has shown strong results in rural areas. Reports from development organisations suggest that hands-on training improves the success rates of small businesses by up to 40 per cent compared to only classroom learning. Many rural entrepreneurs struggle at the start because they lack real-world experience. Centres like this one help solve that problem by allowing people to learn while doing. This approach builds confidence and reduces early business failure.

The initiative is part of a broader multi-location model being implemented across Bangalore, Pune, and Chennai, with expansion planned in Bhuj (2026–27). In all, 30 structured training programmes are being conducted under the initiative, directly benefiting around 1,500 rural entrepreneurs.

India has more than 65 per cent of its population living in rural areas, and many depend on small businesses for income. Studies from NITI Aayog and rural development bodies show that local entrepreneurship can increase household income by 20 to 30 per cent when supported properly. Multi-city models like this one help create a network of trained individuals who can share ideas, build markets, and support each other. Expansion to places like Bhuj is also important because regions with limited industry often need such programmes the most.

The Centre focuses on sustainable livelihood trades, including fruit and vegetable dehydration, handmade soaps, upcycling of bags, bakery products, cold-press oil extraction, candle making and millet-based food processing.

These trades are not chosen at random. Market studies show a growing demand for eco-friendly and handmade products. For example, millet-based foods have seen a sharp rise in demand after India promoted millets as a healthy grain. Similarly, cold-pressed oils and handmade soaps are gaining popularity due to increasing health awareness. Upcycling products also helps reduce waste, which is a major concern in both cities and villages. By focusing on such trades, the Centre is helping entrepreneurs tap into real market demand rather than guesswork.

At the inauguration, Ms Manisha Bhattacharya, Managing Director – Corporate Citizenship, Accenture, said, “Accenture and EDII share a common vision of inclusive growth. It centres on building a future-ready economy. When rural entrepreneurs are given the right environment to discover their potential, they can scale successfully in the green economy. This Learning Centre is built on that belief, and its replication in multiple locations makes it a movement focused on ensuring result-oriented impact and outcomes.”

Corporate support has played a key role in such initiatives across India. Many companies now invest in skill development as part of their social responsibility. Industry reports show that programmes backed by corporate partners often have better funding, improved training quality, and stronger market linkages. This increases the chances of long-term success for participants.

Dr Sunil Shukla, Director General, EDII, opined, “The Eco Action Learning Centre represents a shift from training to transformation. By enabling hands-on exposure to sustainable production systems, we are building a strong foundation for rural entrepreneurs to become self-reliant, innovative, and environmentally responsible business owners.”

Experts in rural development often stress that skill training alone is not enough. People also need support in planning, marketing, and managing money. Centres that combine all these elements tend to create more stable businesses. Self-reliance grows when individuals can handle both production and sales without depending too much on middlemen.

Throwing light on the mandate of the Centre, Dr Raman Gujral, Director – CSR Partnerships, EDII, explained, “By integrating practical learning with enterprise readiness, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between skill development and self-employment, while promoting environmentally responsible entrepreneurship.”

This gap between learning and earning has been a long-standing issue. Many people complete training but fail to start a business due to a lack of guidance. Programmes that include business planning, pricing, and customer understanding have shown better outcomes. In some cases, trainees begin earning within three to six months of completing such courses.

Accenture and EDII’s shared journey of more than a decade has been defined by transforming the lives of rural entrepreneurs who once had no place in the market and today trade confidently within it. Women entrepreneurs, in particular, have been the strongest testimony of what this collaboration stands for; many are now selling their products independently in local and regional markets, and several have taken their enterprises online, building their own e-commerce presence and reaching out to customers beyond their hometowns.

Women-led businesses in rural India are rising steadily. Government and private reports suggest that women entrepreneurs reinvest a large part of their income into their families, improving education and health outcomes. Access to digital tools has also helped many women reach wider markets. Selling through online platforms allows them to move beyond local demand and earn better prices. This shift is slowly changing the economic role of women in villages and small towns.
