PSU OMCs Continue Fuel Supplies of Petrol, Diesel and LPG Amid Demand Surge
Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), IndianOil, BPCL and HPCL, continue operations and logistics coordination across the country to ensure uninterrupted availability of Petrol (MS), Diesel (HSD) and LPG amid an increase in fuel demand in several regions.
In recent days, OMCs have witnessed significantly higher offtake of petroleum products across many parts of India. Gujarat has emerged as one of the key states showing strong growth in diesel consumption. Official figures show that diesel sales in Gujarat rose by 42.6 per cent between 1 May and 28 May 2026 compared with the same period last year. Districts such as Kutch, Botad, Gir Somnath, Banaskantha, Junagadh, Sabarkantha and Rajkot recorded some of the highest increases.
Industry observers say the sharp rise reflects growing movement of agricultural machinery, goods transport vehicles and rural market activity during the harvesting and tilling season. Similar trends have also been reported in states such as Telangana and Maharashtra, where fuel demand increased during the peak farming period. Reports from energy sector analysts suggest that diesel remains the backbone of rural transport, tractors and irrigation systems, making it highly sensitive to seasonal farming activity.
The enhanced demand is being driven by various factors, such as seasonal tilling and harvesting activities across rural agricultural belts. Also, due to the price difference between suppliers other than PSU’s, there is a movement of customers to Public Sector Retail Outlets and additional demand due to migration of institutional and commercial consumers to retail fuel outlets.
Recent reports from the petroleum sector indicate that many customers have shifted from private fuel retailers to PSU-operated outlets. Industry experts believe that differences in pricing have encouraged transport operators, businesses and individual vehicle owners to choose IndianOil, BPCL and HPCL pumps. Several market reports have also pointed to commercial and institutional users purchasing fuel from retail outlets because of the existing price gap in different supply channels. This change has placed additional pressure on PSU retail networks but has also increased their market share.
The rise in fuel demand has come at a time when global oil markets remain under pressure. International crude oil prices have witnessed fluctuations due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and concerns over energy supply routes. In May 2026, India witnessed multiple fuel price revisions as oil companies attempted to manage rising import costs. Energy analysts say that despite these challenges, India’s public sector oil companies have continued to maintain supplies without major disruptions.
Public Sector OMCs continue to maintain uninterrupted supplies through their extensive nationwide network of terminals, depots, pipelines, LPG bottling plants and retail outlets. Supply teams, transport networks, terminal operations and select Retail Outlets are functioning around the clock to ensure seamless product movement and timely replenishment across markets.
India’s fuel distribution system is one of the largest in the world. The three PSU OMCs together operate more than 90 per cent of the country’s fuel retail network. Their vast infrastructure includes thousands of fuel stations, storage depots, LPG bottling plants and pipeline systems connecting major ports, refineries and consumption centres. Industry experts note that such a large network becomes especially important during periods of sudden demand growth, helping prevent major supply disruptions in urban and rural markets.
Public Sector OMCs are maintaining close coordination with the state administration to ensure seamless fuel supply.
Officials from the oil sector have stated that regular communication is taking place between fuel companies, transport agencies and local administrations. This coordination helps speed up tanker movements, monitor stock levels and address supply bottlenecks quickly. In several states, authorities have reviewed fuel availability and confirmed that adequate stocks are available to meet consumer needs.
The Oil Industry would like to reassure consumers that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel and LPG are available across the country and all necessary measures are being taken to maintain smooth and uninterrupted supplies.
This reassurance comes after reports from some regions suggested temporary shortages and long queues at certain fuel stations. However, PSU oil companies have repeatedly stated that these situations were driven by unusually high demand and local buying pressure rather than any nationwide supply problem. Industry officials maintain that inventories remain healthy and distribution systems continue to function normally.
Citizens are advised to continue with normal purchasing behaviour and avoid panic buying. Consumers are also requested to rely only on official communications from authorised agencies and Oil Marketing Companies for accurate information on fuel availability.
Energy market experts say panic buying can create artificial shortages even when sufficient stocks are available. Similar situations have been witnessed in different countries during periods of uncertainty, where fear-driven purchasing temporarily disrupted local supply chains. Officials stress that normal buying patterns will help ensure smooth availability for all consumers while allowing supply teams to manage replenishment efficiently across the country.
