Gujarat Fuel Demand Shock Sparks Big Diesel Rush

Gujarat Fuel Demand Report Reveals Huge Rise in Diesel Consumption

Public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) such as Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL have continued fuel supply operations across the country despite a sharp rise in demand for petrol, diesel and LPG in many regions, including Gujarat. Officials said supply chains, transport systems and fuel storage facilities are working around the clock to make sure there is no disruption in fuel availability.

Data shared by the companies showed a strong rise in diesel sales across several districts of Gujarat between 1 May and 21 May 2026. Gujarat recorded total diesel retail sales of 452726 KL during the period, compared to 320399 KL during the same period last year. This marked an overall growth of 41 per cent.

Some districts recorded even sharper increases. Botad saw a rise of 79 per cent, Gir Somnath reported 76 per cent growth, while Kutch recorded a 75 per cent increase. Banas Kantha, Bhavnagar and Rajkot also showed major growth in diesel demand.

Industry experts believe this rise is linked to the farming season. Many rural areas are currently seeing heavy agricultural activity, including tilling, sowing and harvesting work. Diesel is widely used in tractors, irrigation pumps, harvest machines and transport vehicles. As a result, fuel demand usually rises during this period every year. Petroleum sector reports released earlier by government-linked agencies have also pointed to strong diesel demand from India’s farming and transport sectors.

Officials also said another reason behind the sudden increase is the price gap between public sector fuel outlets and bulk fuel suppliers. Reports published this week stated that many institutional and commercial buyers have started purchasing diesel from public retail pumps because bulk diesel prices are much higher. According to government officials, the price difference in some places has reached Rs 40 to Rs 42 per litre.

This shift has placed extra pressure on public sector petrol pumps in several states. Fuel demand at some retail outlets reportedly rose by 20 to 30 per cent within a short period. Officials from the Petroleum Ministry said some areas faced temporary pressure because of this sudden rise, but supplies remained stable overall.

In Gujarat, Kutch remained one of the highest fuel-consuming regions during the period. Local authorities recently directed oil companies to maintain proper diesel supply in the district because the area depends heavily on transport, industrial work and farming operations.

Across the country, OMCs have assured customers that petrol, diesel and LPG stocks remain sufficient. Social media updates issued by Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL over the past few days also asked people not to panic-buy fuel. Officials said fuel movement through depots, pipelines and transport tankers continues without interruption.

The companies said their nationwide network of terminals, LPG bottling plants and retail outlets is helping them maintain a stable supply even during higher demand. Staff members at fuel depots and transport operations are working continuously to ensure the timely delivery of fuel products to retail stations.

The latest developments are also taking place at a time when global oil markets remain under pressure because of tensions in West Asia. International reports said crude oil prices have increased in recent weeks, leading to higher fuel costs in several countries. India, which imports a large amount of crude oil, is also facing pressure from rising global prices.

Reports also showed that public sector oil companies are currently dealing with heavy financial pressure. Government data recently stated that OMCs are still facing major under-recoveries on petrol, diesel and LPG sales.

LPG supply has also remained an important focus area. India imports a large share of its LPG requirements, especially from the Middle East. Recent global tensions affected supply routes and increased LPG costs. However, oil companies said household LPG supply remains stable and protected.

In some parts of India, rumours about fuel shortages triggered panic buying and long queues outside petrol pumps earlier this week. Local authorities and oil companies later clarified that there was no nationwide shortage and requested people to continue normal fuel purchases.

The oil industry has again assured citizens that enough petrol, diesel and LPG stock is available across India. Officials said all necessary steps are being taken to maintain a smooth supply and prevent any disruption. Customers have been advised to rely only on official communication issued by authorised agencies and Oil Marketing Companies regarding fuel availability and supply updates.
