Everything About India’s First Hydrogen Train

The New Hydrogen-Powered Train Promises Cleaner Air, Lower Noise, And A Better Travel Experience

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is flagging off India’s first hydrogen-powered train on 17 July 2026. This is a big step for Indian Railways because the train uses hydrogen fuel cells instead of diesel. The only emission from the train is water vapour, making it one of the cleanest trains in the country.

Everything About India’s First Hydrogen Train

1. Where will the train run?

  • Starting Station: Jind, Haryana
  • Destination: Sonipat, Haryana
  • Distance: About 89 kilometres
  • Travel Time: Around 90 minutes (depending on stops)
  • Maximum Design Speed: 110 km/h
  • Operating Speed: Around 75 km/h during regular service.

2. Coaches, Class and Capacity

The train has:

  • 10 coaches in total
  • 2 hydrogen-powered driving cars
  • 8 passenger coaches
  • Fully air-conditioned coaches
  • Automatic doors
  • Passenger information system
  • Modern safety features
  • Hydrogen leak, smoke and heat detection systems
  • Can carry about 2,600 passengers in one trip.

3. Fare

As of today, Indian Railways has not officially announced the ticket fare.

Railway officials have indicated that the fare is expected to be similar to that of other passenger trains on this route, but the final price will be announced before or when regular commercial services begin.

4. Benefits to the Public

  • Cleaner Air: The train does not produce smoke like diesel trains. It releases only water vapour.
  • Less Noise: Hydrogen trains are much quieter, making travel more comfortable.
  • Comfortable Journey: Passengers get modern coaches with air conditioning, automatic doors, and better passenger facilities.
  • Better Travel: People living between Jind and Sonipat will get a cleaner and more modern train service.
  • Future Expansion: If this project succeeds, more hydrogen trains may run in other parts of India.

5. Benefits to the Government

  • Lower Pollution: The government can reduce pollution from railway operations.
  • Energy Security: Hydrogen can be produced in India. This reduces dependence on imported diesel.
  • Supports Green India: The project supports India’s clean energy and net-zero goals.
  • Make in India: The train has been designed and integrated in India, helping local manufacturing and engineering.
  • Global Recognition: India joins countries such as Germany, France, Japan, China and Italy that are developing hydrogen-powered trains.

6. Benefits to the Environment

  • Zero Carbon Emissions During Operation: Unlike diesel trains, hydrogen fuel cell trains do not release carbon dioxide while running.
  • Only Water Vapour: Hydrogen combines with oxygen inside the fuel cell to produce electricity. The only by-product is water.
  • Better Air Quality: There is no diesel smoke, helping improve air quality for people living near railway tracks.
  • Less Noise Pollution: Hydrogen trains are quieter than diesel trains.
  • Cleaner Future: If more hydrogen trains replace diesel trains, India can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the railway sector.

How Does a Hydrogen Train Work?

A hydrogen train carries hydrogen gas in special tanks.

Inside The Train:

  • Hydrogen mixes with oxygen from the air.
  • A fuel cell produces electricity.
  • The electricity powers the train’s motors.
  • The only waste product is water vapour.

This means the train runs without burning diesel.

Why This Train Matters

India’s first hydrogen-powered train is more than a new railway service. It is a test of clean transport technology. If it performs well, Indian Railways could introduce hydrogen trains on more non-electrified routes, reducing diesel use, lowering pollution, and supporting India’s move toward cleaner energy.
