New Delhi: Indian cricket team’s limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma is currently recovering well from a left hamstring injury and there are high hopes that the senior batter will make his international comeback for the six-match limited overs series against West Indies, next month.
BCCI had named Rohit as India’s test team vice-captain for the tour of South Africa, but unfortunately he was ruled out of the Ind vs SA Test series due to a strain on his left hamstring, which he sustained during a practice session before the team’s departure to the rainbow nation.
Due to not attaining full fitness, Rohit was also ruled out of Ind vs SA ODI series, set to start from January 19th.
“Rohit’s rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy is going pretty well. He is expected to be okay for the West Indies series. It’s still close to three weeks from now before the first ODI is played in Ahmedabad from February 6,” a BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Three ODIs and as many T20IS will be played between India and West Indies. The ODIs will be played from February 6 to 12, while T20Is will be played from February 15 to 20.
Rohit has been battling hamstring problems for a long time. He was dropped from the team for the first two Test matches after the limited overs series on the 2020-21 Australia tour for the same reason. As per the current BCCI policy, every player has to obtain a ‘fit to play’ certificate by clearing a mandatory fitness test at the NCA before returning to the national team.
