Adani Ports Places India’s Largest Tug Order with Cochin Shipyard Worth INR 450 Crore

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s leading transport utility company, has taken a significant step to strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure. The company has placed India’s largest tug order, worth INR 450 Crore, with Cochin Shipyard Ltd. This strategic decision aligns with the Indian government’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which aim to boost local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.

Under this contract, Cochin Shipyard will construct eight advanced tugs with a bollard pull capacity of 70 tonnes each. These vessels are set to enhance the efficiency and safety of port operations, supporting Adani Ports’ growing maritime activities. Deliveries will begin in December 2026 and continue through May 2028.

Strengthening India’s Maritime Ecosystem

Ashwani Gupta, CEO of APSEZ, expressed his excitement about the collaboration. “This partnership with Cochin Shipyard showcases our dedication to improving India’s maritime infrastructure. It also reflects our belief in the expertise and capabilities of Indian PSUs. By focusing on local manufacturing, we contribute to national initiatives and ensure that our fleet adheres to global safety and efficiency standards,” he stated.

Building on a Successful Partnership

This is not the first time APSEZ has worked with Cochin Shipyard. Previously, the company ordered two 62-tonne bollard pull tugs for Ocean Sparkle Ltd, both of which were delivered ahead of schedule. These tugs are now deployed at Paradeep Port and New Mangalore Port. Additionally, three more Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tugs are currently under construction.

With these eight new tugs, Adani Ports’ total fleet will grow to an impressive 152 vessels, further strengthening its position as India’s maritime leader.

A Step Toward Sustainability and Growth

This order reflects APSEZ’s commitment to sustainable shipbuilding practices. By leveraging Cochin Shipyard’s capabilities, the company aims to support environmentally friendly initiatives while boosting operational efficiency. This move also highlights the vital role of the maritime industry in driving India’s economic growth.

Cochin Shipyard, one of India’s premier shipbuilding entities, is renowned for its high-quality construction standards and timely deliveries. Its partnership with Adani Ports underscores the value of Indian-made solutions in meeting global requirements.

As India continues to emphasize self-reliance in key sectors, collaborations like this between APSEZ and Cochin Shipyard demonstrate the potential of public-private partnerships. By investing in world-class technology and supporting local industries, APSEZ is not only enhancing its operations but also contributing to the nation’s economic and infrastructural progress.
