In a remarkable feat of medical expertise, the Baroda Heart Institute & Research Centre successfully saved the life of a 41-year-old man, Mr. T P, using a unique intervention. Facing severe breathing difficulties and fatigue, Mr. T P’s condition became critical, leaving him unable to take even a few steps.

The Critical Diagnosis:

Upon examination, doctors discovered significantly elevated right-sided heart pressure and signs of pulmonary embolism through 2D ECHO & ECG. Further investigation via CT Pulmonary angiography revealed large near-occlusive blood clots in both right and left pulmonary arteries, posing a fatal threat if not addressed urgently.

The High-Stakes Treatment Journey:

Admitted to the Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) at Baroda Heart Institute, Mr. T P’s treatment began with thrombolytic therapy, a clot-dissolving medicine. Despite 24 hours of treatment, his condition remained critical, necessitating ventilator support. Open-heart surgery, with its inherent risks, was not a viable option.

The Pioneering Intervention:

The expert team of interventional cardiologists, including Dr. Parvindar Singh, Dr. Mahesh Basarge, Dr. Falgun Panchal, Dr. Husain Bhatia, Dr. Sagar Shah, and Dr. Sheshrao Pawar, decided on a high-risk, life-saving intervention in the cath lab. Using a specialized device, they navigated special tubes through the heart into the lung arteries, gradually suctioning out the life-threatening blood clots.

Success in the Cath Lab:

The patient underwent a successful mechanical thrombectomy of the pulmonary artery. Miraculously, as the clots were removed, Mr. T P’s condition stabilized. His oxygen levels improved, his blood pressure normalized, and he could be taken off ventilator support. After a few days of successful therapy, he was discharged, marking a triumph over a life-threatening situation.
