APSEZ Europe Subsea Expansion Wins Global Attention

APSEZ Europe Subsea Expansion Boosts India’s Global Marine Ambitions

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has taken another major step in growing its global marine business. Through its marine platform Astro Offshore, the company has signed a contract with Oceaneering International Inc., a leading US-based engineering and technology company, to work on specialised offshore and subsea projects in Europe. The move gives APSEZ a stronger position in the fast-growing deepwater offshore market and supports its long-term global expansion plans.

The deal is important because Europe has become one of the world’s busiest regions for offshore energy projects. Countries such as Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands are investing heavily in offshore wind farms, underwater cable systems, and subsea infrastructure. Industry experts believe the demand for advanced subsea engineering work will continue to rise over the next decade as Europe pushes towards cleaner energy and better marine connectivity. This creates a large opportunity for companies with strong offshore capabilities.

APSEZ said the agreement marks its entry into specialised subsea operations in Europe. The company plans to combine Astro Offshore’s fleet strength with Oceaneering’s deepwater engineering and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) expertise. Oceaneering is globally recognised for underwater robotics and deepwater engineering services. The company has worked on major offshore oil, gas, and marine projects around the world and is known as one of the largest operators of ROV systems globally.

Industry observers say underwater robotics has become one of the most important parts of modern offshore operations. In deepwater environments, divers often cannot safely reach the seabed. ROVs are therefore used for inspection, repair, pipeline work, and underwater construction. These robotic systems can operate thousands of metres below sea level in difficult conditions. By partnering with Oceaneering, Astro Offshore gains access to advanced technologies and operational knowledge that can help it compete in global offshore markets.

A major part of the expansion is the addition of Energy Savanah, which will soon be renamed Astro Atlas. The vessel is a modern 2021-built DP2 multipurpose support vessel designed for demanding offshore work. The 97-metre vessel can operate in water depths of more than 3,000 metres and is equipped with advanced systems required for underwater engineering projects.

The vessel includes a 150-tonne subsea active heave-compensated crane, a 25-tonne secondary crane, a moonpool, and living space for up to 100 personnel. Marine experts say these features make the vessel suitable for cable laying, subsea construction, pipeline installation, inspection work, and underwater maintenance projects. The DP2 positioning system allows the vessel to maintain a stable position even in rough sea conditions without dropping anchors, which is important for deepwater operations.

Speaking on the development, APSEZ Whole-time Director and CEO Ashwani Gupta said the partnership supports the company’s ambition to build a globally diversified marine platform. He added that the combination of Astro Offshore’s growing fleet and Oceaneering’s engineering expertise would improve the company’s ability to handle complex offshore operations while expanding into Europe.

Astro Offshore CEO Mark Humphreys said Astro Atlas is the company’s largest and most capable vessel so far. According to him, the vessel will help Astro Offshore support more complex offshore projects and meet changing customer requirements in ultra-deepwater environments.

Subsea engineering has become a highly specialised field in the global marine industry. Offshore wind farms, internet cables, oil pipelines, and marine energy systems all require advanced underwater construction and maintenance. Europe, especially, has seen rapid investment in offshore wind projects in recent years. Large underwater cable networks are also being installed to connect renewable energy projects across countries. This has increased demand for specialised vessels and underwater engineering services.

For APSEZ, the move also signals a wider business strategy beyond ports and cargo handling. The company is aiming to build one of the world’s largest integrated marine platforms covering logistics, offshore support, underwater engineering, and deepwater infrastructure services. As part of this roadmap, APSEZ plans to build a 200-vessel fleet by FY31. The company is targeting marine revenue of ₹6,000 crore and has planned a capital expenditure of ₹13,000 crore for its marine business expansion.

The development also reflects the growing international ambitions of Indian infrastructure companies. APSEZ already operates ports and logistics assets in India and overseas markets. With this latest step into specialised European offshore operations, the company is trying to position itself as a global marine and offshore player rather than only a port operator. Analysts believe the offshore engineering sector could become an important long-term growth area for the company as global demand for marine infrastructure continues to grow.
