Imagine having to leave your home, your land, your neighbours, and all your memories behind one day, only to move to a place you never called your own. The 1947 Partition was not just about drawing borders; it broke the hearts of millions of families. Rajkumar Santoshi’s film, Batwara 1947, brings this very pain to the screen in a deeply emotional way.
The Story & Central Conflict
The story follows Sikandar Mirza (played by Sunny Deol), who arrives in Lahore during the Partition. Sikandar leaves a refugee camp with his wife, Hamida (played by Preity Zinta), and their children, and reaches a large mansion (haveli).
The problem begins when they find out that an elderly Hindu woman is already living in the mansion that has been allotted to them as their new home. This is where the real emotional conflict starts:
- Shabana Azmi plays this elderly Hindu woman, called Maai. For her, the mansion is not just four walls, it is her entire past life.
- For Sikandar (played by Sunny Deol), it represents a fresh start, whilst for Maai, it is a final effort to save everything she holds dear.
We get to see both points of view, and both seem right in their own place. Because of this, the story connects deeply with your heart. Just think: if a family is forced to leave their home today and another family moves in tomorrow, what would both sides feel? On one side is the need to survive, and on the other is the pain of losing one’s homeland. The film tries to capture this exact human side of the tragedy.
Performances
- Preity Zinta (Hamida): She brings out the emotional side of family and motherhood. She still looks truly beautiful, and her performance clearly shows the worry of a mother trying to keep her children safe in such a violent world.
- Sunny Deol (Sikandar Mirza): His character is not like Tara Singh from Gadar, but it is no less powerful. Sikandar has lived through displacement and uncertainty, so his decisions are driven by both anger and helplessness. Sunny brings the intensity audiences love him for. While we have seen his action and loud shouting many times, his soft, emotional acting shines through after a very long time. You truly feel his lines, whether he is sitting and weeping or fighting others to protect Maai. His performance is arguably the best in the film.
- Karan Deol: Plays Sikandar’s son, Javed and has not much to do in the film since his father Sunny Paaji is there to carry the film on his shoulders.
- Ali Fazal & Abhimanyu Singh: Ali Fazal appears in an important role as the poet Nasir Kazmi, alongside Abhimanyu Singh and others.
- Shabana Azmi: The biggest surprise. Her character is not just a victim; she stands up for her home and identity. Her performance makes the heavy, emotional scenes even more powerful.
Direction & Overall Verdict
Director Rajkumar Santoshi’s greatest strength is that instead of showing Partition merely as a Hindu-Muslim dispute, he focuses on the common people trapped within it.
The film makes you emotional, but it also gives you mass-appeal moments with thrilling action scenes, such as the railway station fight sequence, or when Sikandar stands like a solid wall and fights his own people to protect Maai.
- The pacing does slow down a little in the middle.
- However, overall, the film is fantastic and packed with strong emotions and powerful acting.

The film connects with you deeply on an emotional level. Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta look wonderful together, and Shabana Azmi delivers a surprising, brilliant performance.
