Coast Guard Educates Communities on Plastic Dangers Through “Beat Plastic Pollution”. A Perfect Environment Day Message
Gujarat Green Drive Honours World Environment Day by the Indian Coast Guard. Under the “Beat Plastic Pollution” campaign, the Indian Coast Guard cleans coasts, raises awareness of environmental issues, and plants more than 1000 trees.
With strong environmental initiatives throughout Gujarat, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) paid a touching homage to World Environment Day 2025. This year’s event had “Beat Plastic Pollution” as its global theme, and the Indian Coast Guard made sure to adhere to it strictly.
In order to encourage sustainability and safeguard the environment, both on land and in the sea, ICG organised walkathons, beach clean-ups, tree plantings, and public awareness campaigns in a number of places under its North West Region.

The main event was a large-scale tree planting drive in the Gujarati village of Lekawada, which is close to Gandhinagar. Leading this effort was the Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (North West), where more than 200 trees were planted by Coast Guard officials, employees, families, and even kids.
Digging soil, planting saplings, and learning about how trees may help reduce pollution and better our future were all done with enthusiasm and vigour by everyone, young and old. Planting trees was only one aspect of the activity; another was sowing the seeds of hope for a cleaner future.
Similar programs were held at District Headquarters No. 1 in Porbandar and District Headquarters No. 15 in Okha; however, the Lekawada event took centre stage. With a full-day campaign that included the following, these units went above and beyond:
- Plantation Drives for Trees.
- Walkathons.
- Cleanups along the coast.
- Programs for Community Interaction.
These activities inspired participation from local fishermen, students, and townspeople in addition to Coast Guard personnel. Together, they cleaned up trash from coastal areas, concentrating on plastic debris, which damages marine life and contaminates beaches, and planted more trees.
In observance of World Environment Day, June 5, 2025, the ICG teams planted more than 500 trees at various stations. Over 1000 trees were planted over the course of the week, which is a fantastic illustration of what can be accomplished when people come together to support the environment.
The Indian Coast Guard wanted to accomplish more than just clean beaches and plant trees with these initiatives. They aimed to raise awareness of the harm that plastic does, the worth of trees, and the importance of group efforts in protecting the environment.
The community engagement initiatives held particular significance. When Coast Guard officials spoke with locals, they explained how plastic ended up in the ocean and talked about simple daily actions that people can take to help the environment, such as using cloth bags instead of plastic and maintaining a clean coastline.
The Indian Coast Guard is more than just a law enforcement agency. Preserving the marine environment is one of its major responsibilities. This comprises:
- Keeping an eye on oil spills.
- Addressing occurrences of marine pollution
- Teaching port officials and fishermen about environmentally responsible methods
By doing this, the Coast Guard contributes to the preservation of fish, turtles, dolphins, and other marine life while also preserving the health of the sea for coming generations.
The Indian Coast Guard demonstrated on this World Environment Day that action is the first step towards true change. Every small action matters, whether it’s educating a youngster, picking up plastic, or planting a tree.
These incidents throughout Gujarat’s coastal region have made a clear statement: protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility, not just the government’s.
