On the eve of Indian Constitutional Day, the School of Criminal and Military Law at Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) organised a series of engaging programmes to honour the spirit and values of the Indian Constitution.

Dr Niharika, Director of the School, opened the event. She spoke about how important constitutional values are in shaping responsible citizens and future legal professionals. This message fits well with why the country observes Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) each year. Constitution Day marks 26 November 1949, when the final draft of the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. The constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950.

Constitution Day was officially declared in 2015 by the government to spread awareness of constitutional values among citizens and to honour B. R. Ambedkar, who chaired the drafting committee of the Constitution.

In that light, Dr. Niharika’s message was timely. She reminded students that being aware of constitutional values such as justice, equality, liberty and dignity is important for anyone entering legal professions. Schools and institutions often organise readings of the Preamble, discussions, mock debates or quiz sessions on Constitution Day.

Students took part in elocution and painting competitions. In elocution, they spoke about how every citizen can help strengthen the spirit of the Constitution. Many emphasised freedom, equality and security,  core values guaranteed by the Constitution. They also discussed women’s rights and LGBT rights.

This kind of activity reflects what many institutions across India do on Constitution Day. The idea is not just to remember history, but to make people aware of the rights and freedoms the Constitution protects, and the duties citizens have in upholding them.

In the painting competition, youngsters created colourful and thoughtful posters. Their art showed many sides of constitutional values in practice: equality, freedom, social justice, and dignity. Bringing creativity into legal awareness helps students connect more deeply with abstract ideas.

All eleven schools of RRU took part. This shows a campus-wide commitment to constitutional values.

The programme ended with a speech by Dr Dimple Raval. She encouraged students to keep taking part in such meaningful activities. She told them that these events help them grow,  not just as students, but as future lawyers and responsible citizens. She thanked the faculty judges for their fairness.

This closing message echoes the larger purpose of Constitution Day celebrations: to remind citizens, especially young people, of the importance of the Constitution in everyday life, not just as a legal document but as a living guide.

In summary, the School’s event is more than a ceremony. It is a way to bring alive the values of justice, equality, liberty, dignity, and respect,   ideas at the heart of the Constitution. Celebrations like these help ensure that the next generation of legal professionals grows with awareness, respect and responsibility.
