Shri Sarbananda Sonowal’s Visit to Deendayal Port Authority Marks a Major Step Towards Green Energy
Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Hon’ble Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, made a significant visit to the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla on January 7, 2025. This visit was a landmark event for India’s maritime sector, highlighting DPA’s dedication to sustainable development, infrastructure modernization, and its role in the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These initiatives align with India’s vision of a developed nation, Viksit Bharat @2047.
During his visit, the Hon’ble Minister laid the foundation for two Centers of Excellence (CoE) focused on Green Hydrogen and Green Maritime Fuels. These centers in Gandhidham are set to become hubs for innovation and collaboration in green energy technologies, driving entrepreneurship and global partnerships. They will also provide training and engagement opportunities for stakeholders, establishing Gandhidham as a knowledge hub for green maritime initiatives.
In addition to laying the foundation stones, Shri Sonowal inaugurated several key projects at DPA:
- Harbour Mobile Cranes to enhance cargo handling efficiency.
- Telescopic Gangway at Oil Jetty-8 for smoother operations.
- A Waste Recycling Plant for the Gandhidham Municipal Corporation, contributing to environmental conservation under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

In his speech, Shri Sonowal praised DPA’s exceptional performance, noting a growth rate of 10.05%, the highest among all major ports in India. He highlighted significant milestones such as surpassing the 110 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) mark 30 days ahead of schedule and handling 354 vessels in a single month.
The Hon’ble Minister also discussed DPA’s future as a Green Hydrogen Hub, a pivotal step towards India’s decarbonization goals. DPA’s initiatives, including the allocation of 3400 acres for green hydrogen production, renewable energy infrastructure, and desalination plants, were commended.
Shri Sonowal released a manual on Bio-Methanol, reinforcing the government’s green initiatives. He also distributed appointment letters to compassionate appointees of DPA’s Traffic Department.
