Harmanpreet Singh Leads India Into FIH Hockey World Cup 2026

India Chase First Hockey World Cup Title Since 1975 as Harmanpreet Singh Targets Historic Milestone

India captain Harmanpreet Singh believes the national men’s hockey team has the experience, balance and confidence to challenge for the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026, as the country looks to end a 51-year wait for its second world title.

The tournament begins on August 15 and will be jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, with India opening its campaign against Wales before facing England and Pakistan in Pool D.

For Harmanpreet, the event carries added significance. The experienced defender will captain India at a Hockey World Cup for the second time, matching the achievement of Ajit Pal Singh, the only Indian captain to lift the men’s Hockey World Cup trophy. Ajit Pal first guided India to a bronze medal in 1971 before leading the team to its only World Cup triumph in Kuala Lumpur in 1975.

Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Harmanpreet said the squad wants to write a new chapter in Indian hockey.

“We won an Olympic bronze medal after 41 years (in Tokyo, 2021), and that gave us hope. It’s been over fifty years since we’ve won the World Cup, and I think it’s time for us to end this long wait and create history. Keep supporting us, keep believing in us, and we will make sure we do our best every time we take the field.”

India enter the tournament after encouraging performances in the closing stages of the FIH Hockey Pro League, where they competed strongly against several leading international teams during matches in Rotterdam and London. Those displays have strengthened belief within the camp that the side can compete with the world’s best over the course of a major tournament.

Assessing India’s preparations, Harmanpreet said the team has developed steadily in recent months.

“Our performance in the Pro League, especially in the concluding leg (Rotterdam and London), showed how much we’ve grown as a team. Our training and matches are going really well, and we’re excited to build on that heading into the tournament.”

India’s recent progress follows several years of rebuilding under Hockey India and successive coaching groups. The men’s team ended a four-decade wait for an Olympic medal by winning bronze at the Tokyo Games in 2021 before repeating the achievement at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Those results restored India’s place among the leading hockey nations after years of inconsistency at major global events.

Harmanpreet, who has become one of the world’s leading drag flick specialists and has earned more than 250 international caps, believes consistency will decide success in the World Cup.

“Consistency is very important for us. We have to perform well and improve match by match, stay focused throughout and avoid mistakes that can prove costly in a tournament like the World Cup. We have to stick to our plans and play as a team.”

The captain also pointed to efficiency inside both striking circles as an area that could separate winning and losing teams.

“The important thing is to be clinical in the D (striking circle), whether attacking or defending. If we’re defending, we have to do it well as a team. Our structure and understanding of players with and without the ball is improving, and we are focused on ensuring it continues that way. Besides that, our focus is on making the most of our opportunities, whether that’s a circle entry, a shot on target, a penalty corner or an attacking set piece.”

India’s 20-member squad combines experienced internationals with emerging players who have impressed during recent international competitions. Harmanpreet believes that mix has strengthened the side.

“The balance has been good. We have confidence in the team after how we played against some top sides recently. We were competitive, and the youngsters know the value of that. The experienced players are also guiding the youngsters to stay focused on our objectives.”

The captain’s own career reflects India’s changing fortunes. Since making his senior debut more than a decade ago, he has become one of the team’s most reliable performers, particularly through his penalty corner conversion rate and defensive leadership. Despite his personal achievements, Harmanpreet insists team success remains his biggest motivation.

“It’s been almost 11 to 12 years since my debut, but my mindset has always been the same. Winning a medal in a major tournament matters more to me than the appearances I have made. Of course, earning more than 250 caps is also a significant achievement, and I’m very happy that I have come this far. I want to thank my team; they have always supported me a lot, and I want to continue delivering on the expectations and responsibilities they have trusted me with. That motivates me a lot.”

He also hopes his experience of helping India win the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup in 2016 will benefit younger members of the current squad.

“I always encourage the team to play with a free mind and enjoy the opportunity, without taking too much stress. When you think too much, that’s when mistakes happen. At the same time, we should always be mindful of our responsibilities. The message in the camp has been clear: don’t worry about making mistakes, but if you do, reacting quickly matters more. We have to cover for each other and make that effort as a team.”

“The mindset you want to take to the World Cup needs to be brought to every practice session while you prepare. Whatever you do and plan in practice, you apply that in matches, and that’s why practice is so important. I have full confidence in the team to carry that through.”

One of the most anticipated fixtures in the pool stage will be India’s meeting with Pakistan. Although India have not lost to Pakistan in international hockey during the past decade, the contest continues to attract enormous attention because of the long sporting rivalry between the neighbouring nations.

Harmanpreet said the players are treating every group match with equal importance.

“Everyone is excited about that match, and there’s an expectation that we will win. But we have to control our emotions and play smartly. We’re excited to face every team in our pool, whether it is Wales, England or Pakistan. Right from the first whistle, we have to keep good pressure on our opponents and finish the chances that come our way.”

The FIH Hockey World Cup remains the sport’s biggest standalone international competition outside the Olympic Games. Alongside traditional powers such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia and Germany, India will aim to convert recent progress into a title challenge.

If Harmanpreet and his teammates succeed, they will achieve something no Indian men’s hockey team has managed since 1975 and bring home a trophy that generations of players have pursued for more than five decades.
