Kadaknath Sets Stage For A Dark Folk Thriller in Gujarati Cinema

Gujarati Folk Thriller ‘Kadaknath’ Brings Mystery, Fear and Tribal Lore to the Big Screen

A new Gujarati-language suspense thriller is set to arrive in cinemas on 26 June 2026, with filmmakers hoping to add another genre-driven title to a regional film industry that has traditionally been dominated by family dramas, comedies and social stories.

The film, Kadaknath, has attracted attention following the release of its official trailer, which introduces audiences to a story built around unexplained deaths, village fears and a search for hidden truths. Written and directed by Kaushik Garasiya, the film stars Abhinay Banker in the lead role alongside Denisha Ghumra, Chetan Daiya, Nirav Bhabhor, Nishu Trivedi, Parmeshwar Sirsikar, Het Panchal, Suryanshi Shah, C. P. Luxman, Chetankumar Solanki, A. G. Qureshi and Dr. Amit Damor.

The trailer opens with a line that sets the tone for the story: “What is the truth? And what is a lie? There is no truth, and nothing is a lie. There is only one truth: death is the truth”.

That statement is followed by scenes of a remote village living in fear after a series of deaths among young residents. Police begin an investigation, but the killings appear far more complex than an ordinary criminal case. As fear spreads through the community, many villagers leave their homes. The central character then enters a forest in search of answers, leading him towards secrets linked to both the murders and the village’s past.

Publicly available descriptions of the film describe it as a crime mystery and folk thriller set in a tribal region of Gujarat. The story centres on Abhaysinh, a poultry farmer who becomes connected to the investigation while confronting disturbing visions and memories. Film listings released ahead of the theatrical launch describe a plot involving local beliefs, inherited traditions and a series of violent crimes that shake a tribal community.

Several visual elements stand out in the trailer. Black Kadaknath chickens, dense forests, funeral pyres and dark rural landscapes appear throughout the footage. These images suggest that the filmmakers are drawing heavily from local folklore and cultural traditions rather than relying solely on conventional crime-thriller storytelling.

The title itself carries significance. Kadaknath is a well-known breed of black chicken found primarily in parts of central India. The bird has long been associated with local traditions and folk beliefs in several communities. By placing the breed at the centre of the film’s identity, the makers appear to be connecting the mystery with regional cultural references familiar to many viewers.

For Gujarati cinema, the arrival of a folk thriller comes at a time when filmmakers are increasingly experimenting with subjects beyond the genres that have historically dominated the market. Over the past decade, Gujarati films have expanded into areas such as crime dramas, psychological thrillers, social issue-based stories and horror films. Industry observers have pointed to changing audience preferences, especially among younger urban viewers, as one reason for this shift.

The growth of streaming platforms has also exposed regional audiences to a wider range of storytelling styles from across India and around the world. As a result, filmmakers have shown greater willingness to explore darker narratives and genre-based projects.

Recent years have seen Gujarati cinema produce films that move away from traditional family entertainment. Crime stories, mystery narratives and suspense dramas have become more visible, reflecting a broader trend seen across Indian regional film industries. The release of Kadaknath therefore fits into a larger movement in which regional filmmakers are seeking new themes while still drawing on local culture and language.

Leading the cast is Abhinay Banker, an actor known for his work in Gujarati cinema as both a performer and writer. His film career includes appearances in productions such as Kevi Rite Jaish, Reva and Mara Pappa Superhero. Over the years, Banker has become a familiar face in Gujarati entertainment through a mix of commercial and content-driven projects.

The supporting cast brings together several performers from the Gujarati film and theatre scene. Denisha Ghumra, Chetan Daiya and Nirav Bhabhor are among the actors featured prominently in promotional material released before the film’s launch. Industry listings have also identified several additional cast members who contribute to the story’s large ensemble structure.

Behind the camera, Kaushik Garasiya serves as writer and director. According to film information released ahead of the premiere, Garasiya has attempted to blend crime investigation, psychological tension and folk traditions within a single narrative. Early promotional material places strong emphasis on atmosphere rather than action, suggesting that suspense and mystery form the backbone of the story.

The film has been produced by Vihang Rathod and Nirav Bhabhor under the Lensqueen Films banner. Production credits released through film industry platforms also list Harshit Saini as cinematographer and Jikku M. Joshi as sound designer, while music duties are handled by Kedar and Bhargav.

After watching the trailer, I feel that one of the main characters in the movie will be the music. The BGM is awesome, completely syncing with the genre. Awesome!!

The visual style presented in the trailer indicates that the filmmakers have placed considerable focus on mood and setting. Forest landscapes, isolated villages and night-time sequences create an atmosphere closer to folk horror and mystery cinema than to mainstream commercial entertainment.

Such stories often depend on tension, uncertainty and local legends rather than large-scale spectacle. If successful, Kadaknath could demonstrate growing audience interest in regionally rooted thrillers that draw from Gujarat’s cultural landscape while using storytelling techniques associated with contemporary suspense cinema.

The film enters theatres at a period when regional cinema across India continues to gain greater national visibility. Productions in languages including Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam and Kannada have increasingly attracted attention beyond their traditional markets. Strong storytelling, digital promotion and wider distribution networks have contributed to this growth.

Whether Kadaknath achieves commercial success remains to be seen, but its release reflects an effort by Gujarati filmmakers to broaden the range of stories available to audiences. By combining mystery, crime, tribal folklore and psychological suspense, the film offers a different direction from the genres that have long defined the industry.

Kadaknath is scheduled for theatrical release on 26 June 2026. The film is presented as a Gujarati folk thriller and will feature Abhinay Banker, Denisha Ghumra, Nirav Bhabhor, Nisarg Trivedi, Chetan Daiya and other cast members in key roles. According to the trailer and official film descriptions, audiences can expect a story built around fear, unanswered questions and a village struggling to uncover the truth behind a series of disturbing deaths.
