This deal marks a substantial investment in India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
The LCA Mk1A aircraft will feature an indigenous content of over 64%, incorporating 67 additional items compared to the previous contract signed in January 2021. This enhancement underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Key upgrades in the LCA Mk1A include the integration of the UTTAM Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, Swayam Raksha Kavach electronic warfare suite, and advanced control surface actuators. These systems enhance the aircraft’s capabilities, making it a formidable asset for the Indian Air Force.
The project is supported by a robust vendor base of nearly 105 Indian companies directly engaged in the manufacture of detailed components. This extensive involvement of domestic suppliers fosters a thriving aerospace ecosystem and promotes economic growth.
Production of the LCA Mk1A is expected to generate approximately 11,750 direct and indirect jobs annually over the next six years. This job creation contributes to skill development and employment opportunities in the aerospace sector.
The acquisition falls under the ‘Buy (India-IDDM)’ category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, aligning with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative aimed at reducing dependence on foreign defence suppliers. This strategic move strengthens national security and promotes indigenous innovation.
Deliveries of the LCA Mk1A aircraft are scheduled to commence in 2027, with completion expected over a period of six years. This timeline ensures a steady enhancement of the Indian Air Force’s fleet with advanced indigenous technology.
HAL’s Nashik facility is set to roll out the first Tejas LCA Mk1A jet in October 2025, marking a significant milestone in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities. This development highlights the growing capacity of domestic production lines to meet the demands of modern defence requirements.
The LCA Mk1A is poised to replace the ageing MiG-21 fleet, enhancing the operational readiness and effectiveness of the Indian Air Force. This transition reflects a commitment to maintaining a technologically advanced and capable air force.
The integration of advanced indigenous systems like the UTTAM AESA Radar and Swayam Raksha Kavach electronic warfare suite in the LCA Mk1A underscores India’s progress in developing cutting-edge defence technologies. These systems enhance the aircraft’s situational awareness and survivability in complex combat scenarios.
The procurement of 97 LCA Mk1A aircraft signifies a major step in India’s defence modernisation efforts, reinforcing the nation’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing and strengthening the Indian Air Force’s capabilities. This strategic acquisition aligns with the government’s vision of a self-sufficient and robust defence sector.
