Empowering MSMEs: Kolkata Hosts Vendor Development Program

The MSME-Development & Facilitation Office (DFO) in Kolkata, under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India, kicked off a two-day Vendor Development Programme for the MSME sector at the Indian Institute of Packaging in Kolkata.
The primary focus of this program is to address challenges faced by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in marketing and business development. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has left many small businesses struggling due to a lack of information, limited resources, and disorganized marketing strategies. In response, the Ministry of MSME, Government of India, has introduced the Procurement and Marketing Support Scheme to enhance the marketability of MSME products and services.
Vendor Development Programme (VDP):
As part of the scheme, the Vendor Development Programme seeks to create a platform where MSMEs, stakeholders, government and quasi-government departments, and Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) can come together. The VDP aims to facilitate market linkages, supporting the effective implementation of the Public Procurement Policy for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) – 2012 (Amended in 2018).
Event Highlights:
The two-day program, inaugurated by key figures including Sri. D. Mitra, Joint Director of MSME-DFO, Kolkata, featured sessions on various marketing-related topics. Around 150 MSMEs participated in the inaugural day, engaging in discussions on topics such as the Public Procurement Policy for MSEs, procurement procedures, vendor registration processes, and the Government E-Marketplace (GeM).
Key Sessions:
- Public Procurement Policy for MSEs – 2012: Understanding the government’s policies to enhance procurement from MSEs.
- Procurement Procedure and Vendor Registration: Exploring processes for CPSUs and government departments.
- Government E-Marketplace (GeM): Shedding light on the online platform for government procurement.
- Marketing Assistance Scheme & other Schemes: Highlighting support initiatives from the Ministry of MSME, Government of India.
- Camp for GeM Registration: Practical assistance for businesses to register on the Government E-Marketplace.
- Product Exhibition and Interaction: Showcasing products of selected MSMEs and facilitating one-on-one interactions with CPSUs.
- Camp for Udyam Registration: A dedicated registration camp for MSMEs under the new Udyam registration process.
Participation of Large Buyers: The event saw the participation of prominent buyers such as GRSE, HAL, BHEL, ONGC, Indian Oil Corporation, and others, providing MSMEs with opportunities for collaboration and market exposure.
Government’s Commitment: Sri. D Mitra, Joint Director of MSME-DFO, Kolkata, expressed satisfaction with the event, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting MSMEs in West Bengal. He highlighted the significance of such programs in identifying emerging demands and showcasing the capabilities of small-scale entrepreneurs.
