The Plot
A promising mix of comedy, drama, and a hint of suspense opens the plot. The idea that a loyalty test specialist would become involved in an elopement situation is novel and appealing. An element of unpredictability is added by the unexpected turn of events when the wrong girl joins their adventure. While maintaining a humorous and light-hearted tone, the story attempts to examine the effects of making snap decisions.
The whole movie is completed in just one night, it is a wedding night for two girls.
The Storyline
Kartik, played by Bhavyga Gandhi is a cheeky young YouTuber who specialises in testing women’s loyalty and is helping boys to get breakups with their dishonest girlfriends. While Aarohi Patel is playing the role of Pranali. She is a bold and outspoken urban girl. The life of Kartik turns upside down when his friend Nilay played by Harsh Thakkar asks for his assistance in organising an elopement with his girlfriend, who is going to marry someone else the same night. But their plot goes haywire as they end up at the incorrect with the same name address “Nana Chiloda” in place of “Mota Chiloda”, where a different girl joins them in their escape, and things turn into a full mess and create chaos.
I will not reveal other things and give a spoiler alert as I want you to visit the theatres and watch the movie.
The Dialogues
The script is written by Prem Gadhiv, Nikita Shah and Aditi Verma, all three have done a great job. The dialogues are written as we speak during our daily life in Gujarati. One such dialogue in a monologue sequence played by Aaorhi Patel is “Maito aaje Pranali ne paadi didhi, to pachhi aa kese main to char ne paadi didhi che..”
The dialogues and comic punches are humorous and are not asking the audience to laugh forcefully instead making them laugh and laugh loudly.
There are two monologues in the movie which I think were too long for my liking but were necessary according to the script. However, this is one of the best script writing in this type of movie.
The Acting
Kartik’s lead actor is convincingly played by none other than Bhavya Gandhi, the part of a quick-witted and naughty YouTuber. The funny moments are focused on his comical timing and facial expressions. Kartik’s personality is complemented by Tanmay played by Deep Vaidya, the encouraging, anxious but fattu friend who is obsessed with his fiance, who gives a sincere and realistic performance. Deep Vaidya is one of the best comedy actors in the Gujarati Film Industry.
But the actress who has stolen the show and the scenes is Aarohi Patel, playing the role of Pranali. She has outplayed everyone and has grabbed most of the attention of the audience with her stellar performance, dialogue delivery and screen presence. She has played the role of an outspoken, brave and bold girl which she originally not her own real character. I have met her quite a few times and found her to be a humble human being and a completely down-to-earth personality.
The two RJs Radhika Barot and Harsh Thakkar are making their debut in the movie industry through this movie are also making their presence felt and showing their talent. Particularly, Radhika looks gorgeous on and off the screen. Harsh has also been able to make an impact on the movie by his small but significant role as Nilay.
The Direction
“Ajab Raat Ni Gajab Vaat” is directed by Prem Gadhvi and Killol Parmar. Prem Gadhvi is making a debut as a directed through this movie. He has also been one of the writers of this movie. Killol Parmar has also recently directed one very good Gujarati movie “Interview“. The direction is fine. However, the directors forgot that “Baapno Bagicho hangout place is at Sindhu Bhavan Ahmedabad and “Nana Chiloda and Mota Chiloda are near Gandhinagar. Baap no Bagicho is not in between these two Chilodas.
The whole movie is completed in one night and hence all the shootings are done at night only. The directors have managed to maintain the proper lights and camera angles and have not followed the so-called DARK THEME as has been prevalent recently in South Movie and Bollywood.
The Cinematography
Particularly during the elopement’s outdoor scenes, the film’s visuals are lively and energetic. The transition from humorous to stressful is well captured by the use of different colour schemes and lighting. Nevertheless, a few of the film’s interior sequences lack the cinematic elegance and feel claustrophobic.
The Screenplay
The audience is kept engaged by the screenplay’s abundance of clever conversations and amusing scenarios. The primary characters’ interactions are interesting and seem natural. The story keeps its pace from the beginning till the end and does not give a chance to the audience to even blink their eyes.
The Positive Points
- Novel Idea: It’s interesting and novel to combine loyalty tests with an unintentional elopement.
- Humour: The well-timed punchlines and real humour make the humorous moments real and natural and actually make the audience laugh which is what the audience looks for.
- Performances: The main actors, particularly Aaohi Patel, Bhavya Gandhi and Deep Vaiday are the key performers of this movie. Particularly Aarohi Patel, has earned her place in the hearts of the audience.
- Twists: The plot is made more interesting by the surprising turn of the wrong girl.
- Only Two Sons: There are only two songs which do not interfere with the storyline and break it.
- The Message: There is a strong message for both generations, parents and their children to understand each other, listen to each other and make wise and appropriate decisions.
The Negative Points
- Tone Inconsistency: The transitions between emotional drama and comedy seem sudden.
- More Comedy Punches: I agree the movie has comedy punches but still, I was expecting a bit more comedy punches when you have a person like Deep Vaidya with you.
- Pacing Problems: Some sequences drag needlessly, which detracts from the overall flow, especially the two monologue scenes.
- Second Half Predictable: The film’s second half is less charming than its first and seems predictable.
- Under Utilized Character: I felt that Radhika Barot’s Character as Kinjal has very little dialogue, she should have spoken more words, this is my personal opinion.
- The movie may not attract children below the age of 15.
The Final Conclusion
With a unique concept and a lot of humorous components, the movie is a fun and oddball journey. Despite its pacing and tone issues, it’s worth seeing for the humour and acting. The viewer who likes light-hearted dramas with some fun, laughs and surprising turns will like this movie. If you are a content lover and Gujarati Movie lover, you will definitely like this movie.
