Can a Serious Topic Like This Be Turned into Comedy?
What if a girl becomes pregnant without ever having had a physical relationship? Can comedy be found in such a sensitive topic? Is this situation funny or more of a tragedy? To handle such a subject, the makers need brilliant writing and outstanding actors. Have they succeeded in doing so? Let’s discuss.
The Story and the Cast
The series features talented actors like Jaaved Jaaferi, Shweta Basu Prasad, Sonali Kulkarni, Aashim Gulati, and Apara Mehta (who plays the grandmother in this show). Sonali Kulkarni plays a single mother as (Paakhi), and her daughter, played by Shweta Basu Prasad, (Roohi) is the main character.
The twist in the story is that this girl, Roohi gets pregnant due to an accidental IVF mix-up. She had gone for a medical test, but due to a mistake, she ends up with someone else’s sperm. Now, the big question is: Will she accept this child? How will her family react? What about the man whose child it actually is?
The show tries to find “comedy of errors” in this mix-up. Jaaved Jaaferi plays a daily soap actor, and there are various subplots involving Aashim Gulati and his wife, (Amy Aela) (Sasti Katrina Kaif) their connection to the child, the protagonist’s friends, and much more.
The character of Shweta Basu Prasad (Roohi) is shown as ambitious but not overly career-focused like typical modern-day portrayals. Her struggle with whether to keep the child or not becomes an emotional journey.
This brings us back to the main question: Can such a serious topic be turned into comedy? The answer depends on the execution. The series tries to mix different emotions—comedy, parenting issues, women empowerment, romance, and even old-fashioned family values. However, this mix doesn’t always work.
One major problem is that the direction and screenplay don’t match. The narration and text style feel comedic, but the actors perform their scenes seriously. This creates confusion for the audience—should they laugh or feel emotional? Sometimes, it feels like the makers are being insensitive to the subject, which weakens the connection with the viewers.
The Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths: The actors have done a great job. Their expressions, dialogue delivery, and performances make the show watchable.
Weaknesses: The story relies too much on coincidences. A mix-up leads to pregnancy, the father has a connection to the girl’s family, his wife’s involvement adds another layer, and so on. Too many things happen just by chance, which reduces the impact of the story.
The production quality is decent, not exceptional. Had it been slightly worse, it would have felt like a daily soap opera. Thankfully, the makers avoided exaggerated drama with slow-motion head turns and dramatic background sounds.
Newz Daddy’s Opinion
The series had potential, but weak direction and screenplay reduced its impact. The performances save it from being a complete failure. Overall, it’s a time-pass watch—good for casual viewing but not something extraordinary.
⭐ My Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars.
