Dhirubhai Ambani University Convocation blends learning with human values
Dhirubhai Ambani University (DAU), formerly known as DA-IICT, marked an important milestone on January 17, 2026, as it held its 20th Convocation Ceremony at its Gandhinagar campus. The ceremony saw 649 students receive their degrees across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, reflecting the university’s steady growth over two decades as a centre for higher learning. Convocation ceremonies are more than formal events. They symbolise years of hard work by students, support from families, and the role of institutions in shaping future professionals.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Professor Emeritus from the Department of Electrical Engineering and former Director of IIT Madras. His presence carried special meaning, as he has long been associated with academic leadership and educational reform in India. Leaders with such experience often use convocation platforms to remind young graduates about the need for ethical thinking, lifelong learning, and responsible innovation, values that are especially important in fast-changing technology-driven careers.
Mr. Souvik Sarkar, Head of the planning, placement and marketing, said that the highest package received by the students of Dhirubhai Ambani University this year is about 15L per annum, which is excellent for a fresher. Around 75% of the total students have already been placed in different parts of the country in MSMEs and MNCs. The Dhirubhai Ambani University management is also in talks with the Overseas university for collaboration. They are in conversation with some universities in Australia, the USA and the UK.
The ceremony was presided over by Ambassador T. S. Tirumurti, a Member of the Board of Governors. His participation highlighted the university’s connection not only with academia but also with public service and global engagement. Universities today are expected to prepare students for roles that go beyond technical skills, including diplomacy, governance, and international cooperation, especially as India’s global presence continues to expand.
DAU’s senior leadership was also present, including Prof. (Dr.) Tathagata Bandyopadhyay, Director General, along with directors of the Schools of Technology and Law, and senior administrative officers. Such gatherings underline how modern universities operate as collaborative spaces, where academic vision, administration, and student welfare work together to build strong institutions.
There are students who received the President’s Gold Medal for the academic year of 2024-2025. These are the bright future of India.
Among the graduating students, 348 belonged to undergraduate programmes such as B.Tech in ICT, Mathematics and Computing, honours programmes with interdisciplinary minors, and Electronics and VLSI Design. These courses reflect current industry needs, where strong foundations in computing, mathematics, and electronics are essential. The inclusion of honours and specialised streams shows the university’s focus on depth of learning and early exposure to advanced areas.
At the postgraduate level, 295 degrees were awarded across programmes, including M.Tech, M.Sc, and M.Des. Fields such as Data Science, Agriculture Analytics, and Communication Design point towards emerging areas where technology meets real-world problems. Agriculture analytics, for example, plays a growing role in improving crop planning, water use, and farmer incomes, while communication design shapes how information is shared in digital and social spaces. The award of six PhD degrees also highlights the university’s contribution to research and knowledge creation, which is a core responsibility of higher education institutions.
The celebrations began a day earlier with a Pre-Convocation Award Ceremony on January 16. This event recognised excellence among both faculty and students. Awards such as the Faculty Appreciation Award and Student Research Excellence Award encourage a culture where teaching quality and original research are valued equally. Recognising co-curricular achievements also shows that universities see education as a balanced experience, where leadership, teamwork, and creativity matter alongside academics.
A special message from the President of Dhirubhai Ambani University, Tina Anil Ambani, added a personal and thoughtful touch to the ceremony. Her emphasis on human-centred design reflected a growing global understanding that technology must serve people, not just systems. Her advice on physical and mental health addressed a concern that many young professionals face today, as fast-paced careers often come with stress and pressure. Such messages help graduates see success as a mix of professional achievement and personal well-being.
As the university marks 25 years of its journey, it has introduced the Distinguished Alumni Award to honour former students who have made meaningful contributions to their fields and society. The first recipient, Mr. Pavitar Singh, a 2005 B.Tech graduate, represents how alumni success strengthens an institution’s legacy. Alumni achievements often inspire current students and help universities build strong networks across industries and sectors.
Overall, the convocation highlighted Dhirubhai Ambani University’s evolution into a multidisciplinary institution. Its focus on engineering, data science, agriculture analytics, design, and research shows an effort to stay relevant in a changing world. By blending technical education with human values and social awareness, the university continues to shape graduates who are prepared not only for careers but also for responsible roles in society.
