HDFC Bank CSR Expands Support Across Villages in India

HDFC Bank CSR Spend Rises to ₹1,316 Crore as Parivartan Programme Reaches 10.77 Crore People

HDFC Bank says its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes have now reached more than 10.77 crore people across all 28 States and 8 Union Territories of India, with spending on community projects rising to ₹1,316.18 crore during the 2025-26 financial year.

The figures, published in the bank’s Integrated Annual Report for FY2025-26, show that CSR expenditure increased by more than ₹248 crore compared with the previous financial year. Since launching its umbrella CSR programme, Parivartan, the bank has invested about ₹7,492 crore in projects covering rural development, education, healthcare, skill training, financial inclusion and environmental conservation.

Corporate social responsibility has become an important part of India’s business landscape since the Companies Act, 2013 introduced mandatory CSR spending for eligible companies. India remains one of the few countries in which qualifying businesses are legally required to allocate a share of their profits to approved social development activities. Banks have become major contributors to these programmes because of their nationwide presence and links with local communities.

One of HDFC Bank’s largest initiatives remains its Holistic Rural Development Programme (HRDP). During 2025-26, the programme expanded to more than 11,000 villages, compared with over 10,430 villages a year earlier.

Rather than focusing on a single issue, the programme combines work in agriculture, water conservation, education, healthcare, sanitation, livelihoods and village infrastructure. This approach aims to improve everyday living conditions while helping villages become more self-reliant over time.

The bank also increased its work in India’s border regions. According to the annual report, CSR activities now cover 498 border villages, up from 298 villages during the previous year. These projects support the objectives of the Government of India’s Border Area Development Programme and the Vibrant Villages Programme, which seek to strengthen infrastructure, improve public services and encourage economic activity in remote settlements located near international borders.

Projects in these villages include rural electrification, better farming facilities, livelihood support, education infrastructure and healthcare services.

Speaking about the programme, Mr Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director, HDFC Bank, said:

“Our CSR Initiatives through Parivartan continue to be guided by our belief that lasting change is built village by village, family by family, in close partnership with the communities we serve. This year, our efforts to deepen the Holistic Rural Development Programme and extend our reach into border villages reflect our commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind. As we look ahead, we remain focused on building on this journey with the same philosophy that has guided us from the start — that development must be inclusive, locally relevant and future-focused.”

Education remained another major area of investment during the year. HDFC Bank reported that it has awarded more than 36,300 scholarships, established over 3,460 SMART schools, and developed 930 community libraries through its education initiatives. These programmes seek to improve access to quality learning, particularly in underserved areas where schools often face shortages of digital resources and learning facilities.

Employment support continued through vocational education and entrepreneurship programmes. According to the bank, more than 9.6 lakh people have received skill development or livelihood assistance under Parivartan. Such programmes are increasingly important as India works to create employment opportunities for its large young population while helping women and other disadvantaged groups gain financial independence.

Healthcare projects remained focused on preventive care, maternal and child health, hygiene awareness and mobile medical services. The bank said more than three lakh people have benefited from these initiatives.

Financial literacy has become another growing area of CSR activity across the banking industry as digital payments become part of daily life. HDFC Bank said its financial inclusion programmes promote savings, banking services and insurance awareness. The bank also highlighted its ‘Vigil Aunty’ campaign, which raises awareness about digital fraud. According to the bank, the campaign has reached more than 75 lakh followers across different platforms.

Environmental protection formed the sixth major pillar of Parivartan. The bank reported creating 16,091 water conservation structures and installing more than 80,527 solar lights. Water conservation has become increasingly important in many parts of India as changing weather patterns, rising temperatures and growing demand place additional pressure on groundwater resources. Solar lighting projects also help improve safety and reduce dependence on conventional electricity in villages with limited infrastructure.

HDFC Bank said the six focus areas under Parivartan are aligned with 10 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global goals, adopted by UN member states in 2015, cover areas including poverty reduction, quality education, good health, clean water, clean energy and climate action.

CSR spending has become an important metric for many large Indian companies, as investors, regulators, and communities pay closer attention to environmental and social performance alongside financial results. While the scale of investment often attracts attention, the long-term success of such programmes depends on how effectively projects improve living conditions and continue delivering benefits after initial funding ends.

For HDFC Bank, the latest figures indicate continued expansion of its rural development programme, wider coverage of border villages and higher investment in community projects during FY2025-26, alongside efforts in education, healthcare, livelihoods, financial awareness and natural resource management.
