For filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s eagerly anticipated magnum opus, “Ponniyin Selvan,” which stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Nandini, the Queen of Pazhuvoor, it needed 18 skilled craftsmen to translate the designs of three great designers into reality.
The handcrafted jewellery worn by the movie character Nandini was meticulously replicated to give viewers the idea that it originated during the Chola era.
The necklace was created by Kishandas & Co. of Hyderabad and involved three artisans/jewelry designers. The entire process—from inspiration to character specifications to historical research—took about six months. There were 18 craftsmen involved.
The jewellery Nandini is wearing is genuine art, comprising necklaces set in the classic Kundan style and a variety of accessories like vanki, rings, and jhumkas adorned with uncut and priceless gems like emeralds, rubies, and yellow sapphires.
According to Pratiksha Prashant, a representative for Kishandas and Co., “It is a dream partnership to translate iconic director Mani Ratnam sir’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ idea, and a great canvas to exhibit our artistry and exquisite precision to handcrafting traditional Indian jewellery.
