Rajnath Singh’s Powerful Hanoi Defence Talks Surprise Asia

Powerful Hanoi Meeting Boosts India-Vietnam AI and Defence Partnership

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh held important defence talks with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang in Hanoi on May 19, 2026. The meeting showed how quickly India and Vietnam are building stronger ties in defence, technology and regional security. Both countries stressed the need for peace, safety and free movement in the Indo-Pacific region, which has become one of the world’s most sensitive strategic areas.

India and Vietnam have steadily increased defence cooperation during the past few years. Experts from strategic research groups have often pointed out that both nations share common concerns over maritime security in the South China Sea and the wider Indo-Pacific region. Vietnam is seen as one of India’s most trusted partners in Southeast Asia. Defence exchanges, naval cooperation and training programmes have grown strongly since the two countries upgraded their relationship to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During the bilateral meeting, both leaders discussed maritime security, defence industry projects, cyber security, military training and peacekeeping operations under the United Nations. Analysts say this reflects India’s larger push to work more closely with ASEAN nations in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific. Rajnath Singh has repeatedly spoken in recent years about the importance of a rules-based international order and freedom of navigation in the region.

The agreement to increase joint exercises and defence exchanges is expected to help both armed forces improve coordination and preparedness. Military experts believe that regular interaction between the defence forces of friendly nations builds trust and improves operational understanding. India has already increased its naval presence and defence diplomacy across the Indo-Pacific through exercises, ship visits and maritime partnerships.

A major highlight of the visit was the growing focus on advanced technology. India and Vietnam exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Technology. Defence experts across global journals have noted that AI and quantum systems are becoming central to future warfare, communication systems and cyber defence. Several countries are now investing heavily in military AI research to improve surveillance, decision-making and security systems.

India has also increased its own efforts in defence technology. Reports in recent months have shown that Indian defence projects are now using AI-based systems for battlefield awareness, cybersecurity and military communications. Experts believe cooperation with Vietnam in these sectors could help both nations improve technical capabilities and strengthen digital security.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh also announced the setting up of an Artificial Intelligence Lab at the Telecommunications University in Nha Trang. Strategic experts say this step is important because defence cooperation today is no longer limited to weapons and military drills. Technology education, cyber systems and digital infrastructure are becoming equally important. The AI Lab is expected to support training, research and innovation for Vietnamese students and defence professionals.

The virtual inauguration of the Language Lab at the Air Force Officers’ College in Vietnam also carried symbolic importance. Defence observers often say language training helps military officers communicate better during joint exercises, training programmes and peacekeeping missions. India has supported several capacity-building projects in friendly countries as part of its wider regional outreach.

After the bilateral talks, Shri Rajnath Singh met Vietnam’s President and General Secretary, Mr To Lam. The leaders discussed cooperation in defence, trade, maritime affairs, digital transformation and people-to-people ties. Political observers say India and Vietnam now see each other as reliable long-term partners in Asia. Vietnam values India’s support for its development goals, while India sees Vietnam as an important partner in Southeast Asia.

The two leaders also underlined the deep civilisational links between India and Vietnam. Historians often mention that cultural and trade relations between the regions date back centuries through Buddhism and maritime trade routes. These historical ties continue to shape modern diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Earlier in the day, Shri Rajnath Singh paid tribute to former Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh on his 136th birth anniversary. Ho Chi Minh remains one of Vietnam’s most respected national figures. His close friendship with Indian leaders during the early years of independence helped create strong goodwill between the two countries. Rajnath Singh described Ho Chi Minh’s vision and leadership as a lasting inspiration for future generations.

India’s growing engagement with Vietnam is also part of New Delhi’s wider effort to strengthen partnerships across Asia. Defence analysts believe such partnerships will play a key role in maintaining regional balance, improving economic cooperation and ensuring security in the Indo-Pacific for years ahead.
